Congratulations to the 2026 Sony Alpha Female+ Creator of the Year, Megan Brief! 🎉

After trekking through the desert terrain of Northwestern Argentina and climbing to what she calls the “Kingdom of the Condors,” Megan spent over an hour immersed in their world, watching them soar overhead.

“I’ll never forget the howling sound as the wind currents flowed through their feathers. I was only a few hundred feet below them, so you can imagine the volume at that distance.” She shares, “It was otherworldly.”

Winning Creator of the Year marks a full-circle moment in her journey. “Winning the Sony Alpha Female+ is a huge honor. Side Quest! A few weeks ago I rescued an abandoned baby deer mouse and successfully nursed her back to health. Today, I will be releasing her, now that she is old enough and strong enough to forage for food on her own.

This wasn’t my first foray into wildlife rehabilitation, but it was certainly the most challenging. Growing up, I experienced the love and loss of many orphaned and injured animals, including deer, raccoons, and birds.

My last rescue was a Eurasian collared dove with a broken wing and concussion. No vet office or raptor center would take him in because of the risk of disease.

Unfortunately, mice are treated the same. Considered to be “nusaince” animals and “vermin,” rodents are often viewed as disposable. This little life deserves so much more.

After visiting my local ACE hardware store, Murdochs, and Tractor Supply, I gathered all the necessary materials: a heat lamp, soft pine bedding, a nursing bottle, and kitten formula. I also constructed a nest of cotton balls so she could nestle underneath.

Newborn mice cannot regulate their own body temperature, so having an external heating source is a must. You can also achieve this by placing a heating pad beneath the enclosure or by filling a sock with warm dry rice. If an animal is already furred or feathered, they don’t need an external heat source, but this little lady was shivering badly and had almost succumbed to the outside elements.

The kitten formula is an emergency substitute for their mother’s milk, and can be made with goat’s milk and diluted with water. At this stage, the mice require feedings every 2-3 hours.

To prevent the mouse from aspirating, I made a tiny puddle of milk in my hand and let her drink at her own pace. Bubbling from the nose means they are inhaling the milk, which can cause infection, and even death.

After a full tummy, I used a damp cotton swab in a circular motion around her gentle area. It sounds weird, but newborn mice cannot pee or poo without stimulation.

The Ghost of the Mountains

The presence of a spirit is often unseen. It is felt. The Snow Leopard’s elusive nature gives rise to an air of mystique, which only grows thicker as the altitude climbs.

To find a Snow Leopard, you must follow the echoes of their existence.

I kneel on the ground to photograph a set of fresh prints. Wide, fur-covered paws serve as snowshoes, helping to silently distribute their weight as they traverse vast distances.

The spine of an Ibex, licked clean: a sign of a violent story that ended with the Snow Leopard as the victor. A male Ibex weighs more than twice the body mass of a Snow Leopard.

Scat laced with hair and bones: traces of a Snow Leopard’s survival and evidence one may be close by…

Tracking a Snow Leopard isn’t about finding the big cat. It’s about learning to read fragments of a life you may never come to see.

Ladakh Urial ‘Shapo’ | Endemic & Endangered

These high-altitude ungulates were once on the edge of extinction. A few decades ago, fewer than 100 grazed on the banks of the Indus and Shyok rivers.

Though trophy hunting and poaching for the illegal wildlife trade has since decreased, Ladakh urials still face other forms of conflict with humans.

Fortunately, Buddhist teachings of compassion and community-based conservation programs like livestock-free wildlife reserves are helping increase urial populations and reaffirm the commitment to peaceful coexistence with wildlife.
