Thank you, Society for Asian Art, Asian Art Museum of San Francisco, for hosting me to speak today on the Mingei movement and its influence on American studio pottery. A beautiful, important museum and the recent installations of contemporary Japanese ceramic art are inspiring. by @meghen_jones

Book Launch: Path of the Teabowl
Edited by Meghen Jones @meghen_jones
Published by Alfred Ceramic Art Museum @alfredceramicartmuseum

Alfred University's own Meghen Jones will talk about Path of the Teabowl, a monumental book she edited in conjunction with an exhibition of the same name here at ACAM. Originating in China and developed in Korea and Japan, the teabowl has been a special category of ceramics for more than a thousand years. Path of the Teabowl illuminates the historical, geographic, stylistic, and conceptual trajectories of this iconic genre, tracing its evolution from the black and brown glazed bowls used by Song Dynasty Buddhist monks to the avant-garde explorations of contemporary artists worldwide.

When: September 18, 2026 at 4:30 pm
Where: Alfred Ceramic Art Museum at Alfred University

Loved learning last night about the history beginning in the late 1970s of the Alfred earthenware bread pan — a way to achieve nutty caramelized crusts à la brick ovens (need to try! Who is baking bread to share?). On view now: “The Alfred Bread Pan: Ceramic Technology from Shale to Surface” at the Inamori Museum of Fine Ceramics at Alfred University. And so great that Karen Tufty-Wisniewski continues to make them using local shale. taken in Alfred University by @meghen_jones

Happy to share that Path of the Teabowl, the multi-author volume I edited, has just been published! From Song dynasty brown and black glazed bowls to contemporary avant-garde explorations, we trace the fascinating “paths” of one of ceramics’ most iconic genres.
