💫❤️‍🔥 MEET THE READER ❤️‍🔥💫

I have so many new besties around here I thought it would be a good idea to re-introduce myself!!

My name is Meghan, I turn 30 on March 26th ♈️, and I live in Southern California with my mini dachshund Maya 🐶 I love EDM music and festivals, I’m 420 friendly, and I have a huge houseplant collection!

I loved reading growing up, but my course load in law school ruined reading for pleasure for a long time and I finally picked the hobby back up in 2021 - haven’t looked back since 🫡 I read a little bit of everything - mystery, thriller, romance, fantasy, historical fiction, memoirs, I love it all.

Some of my favorite books:
💫 Yours Truly - Abby Jimenez
💫 Jar of Hearts - Jennifer Hillier
💫 Bride - Ali Hazelwood
💫 ACOTAR - SJM
💫 The One - John Marrs
💫 Happy Place - Emily Henry
💫 Lights Out - Navessa Allen

I’m truly here for the vibes not the aesthetics, and I hope you love being here with me!

MALIBU RISING by @tjenkinsreid
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

I know I know, as usual I’m late to things 🫣😅
But also, as usual, another hit from TJR!

Nina Riva and her siblings are dealt a unique hand of life: an absentee rockstar father, a lonely alcoholic mother who loses her way, and the unfairness of having to grow up far before you’re ready to. This is a story about siblings who look out for each other, even in tough times & about the nuances of grief in all types of relationships.

Loved loved loved - loved the small connections with the other TJR universe characters & plots, loved the siblings and their personalities and bonds, loved the pace of the story. I definitely think there could’ve been a few less characters, there were so many randoms mentioned & even some supporting characters that I just don’t feel really supported the story much. I would’ve loved an epilogue of the aftermath in Malibu & a glimpse into Nina’s new life abroad, but otherwise def a favorite of mine for TJR books for sure

Oh also, @justjuliawhelan narrated it so the audiobook was incredible as well 🙌🏼

THIS IS ME: A RECKONING by Hayden Panetierre
⭐️⭐️⭐️.5

Growing up watching Hayden on so many different shows & movies, and then hearing so much about her addiction & custody battles as an adult, I was really hoping this would’ve given more of a real and raw perspective on the tough chapters she went through. She wraps it up essentially saying “this is me, I’m accepting all of this hard past I’ve experienced and how my actions affected other people and moving forward” but then the overall book didn’t feel like it really captured that?

I LOOOOOOOOOOOVED loved loved the show Nashville (which is always funny to me bc I actually very much dislike country music & most western things LMAO) and really wish she would’ve talked more about her experience handling the producers basically write her real life struggles into her character’s plot in the show

It was interesting hearing about her formative Hollywood years and the dynamic w/ her mom & being a child actor but otherwise it felt like a really distant recollection of the major moments of her life rather than a “reckoning”

BEHIND EVERY GOOD MAN by @saraconfino
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

After discovering her husband Larry has been cheating on her with his secretary, Beverly decides she’s not only going to leave him but she’s gonna get even. Larry is running the campaign for the incumbent Senator in Maryland, so Beverly decides to get a job working for the underdog candidate running against him & uses her political savvy and a woman’s drive to change everyone’s lives for the better

What a cutie little book!!! Think if Scandal (the tv show) were PG-13, set in 1962, and had less murder and violence 😂 The narrator did a great job with the audiobook, great distinction with the character voices and very entertaining pace. No crazy plot twists or plot holes, just a straightforward & wholesome quick read!

ACCOMPLICE TO THE VILLAIN by @hannahnicolemae
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Hmmmmmmm I’m not sure how I feel about the plot twist at the end of this one and I was kind of bored around the 75% mark, but overall this was still such a fun installment in this series! I always love multiple character POVs, especially when we get the Villain’s inner dialogue 😂🤭

I normally hate a slow burn, and this is a SLOWWWWWWWWWW burn, but we FINALLY get some real palpable romantic progress at 90% in this 3rd book and I just love Evie and Trystan 🥹

The epilogue……KINGSLEY!!!!??????? I CANT WAIT for him to be a bigger character next book (I hope 🥲)

I first started this back in October around the time I hit my huge reading slump, so I’m glad I re-started this and finished just in time for the 4th one (which I just pre-ordered this week @barnesandnoble hehe) to come out next month!

NONE OF THIS IS TRUE by @lisajewelluk
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Such a great audiobook!

When famous podcaster Alix meets strange and lonesome Josie on the eve of their shared 45th birthday, an unexpected connection forms between them. Alix decides to record a podcast about Josie’s complicated life/past and unravels creepy mysteries and crimes that no one could have expected…. But how much of it is true?

This captivated me from pretty early on and I ended up really enjoying the format. Told from multiple POVs, some of the chapters are snippets from Alix’s ‘podcast’ episodes, some are snippets from a ‘Netflix documentary’ about Josie & the podcast episode done on her life, and some are ‘interviews’ with different characters. At first I was worried it would be hard to follow along that kind of format in audiobook, but it t ended up being pretty enjoyable!

Super suspenseful and creepy, I really had no idea where it was going or what the twists would be, entertained the whole time for sure. Can’t wait to discuss at book club!

DINNER FOR VAMPIRES by @msbethanyjoylenz
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Loved! I saw clips of her episode of Call Her Daddy and knew I wanted to listen to her new book. She’s such a great storyteller, at some points I forgot this wasn’t fiction 🤣 I loved that she used accents/voices for some of the characters, and even had some of the other actors voice their pieces of conversations too.
Really interesting learning the details about the cult she grew up in and knowing that was all happening at the same time she was filming One Tree Hill! I wish maybe some more snippets of how OTH actors felt about everything/their perspective on things would’ve been cool but obviously it’s her book not theirs lol

WHEN SHE WOKE by Hillary Jordan
⭐️⭐️.75

In a future hyper-religious dystopian regime, Hannah is among the criminals in society forced to paint their skin a color that represents the crimes they’ve committed instead of spending time in prison. Hannah’s crime? She got pregnant by the famous preacher-turned-politician and chose to have an abortion.

Hmm, I’m not even sure what to say about this. I had expectations for a gripping dystopian novel but this was really boring. You could tell there was definitely inspiration taken from The Scarlett Letter, Handmaids Tale, and Orwell, but the overall execution fell really flat. There wasn’t really a clear direction for the plot, nothing about this stood out to be super memorable, and the ending feels like it tried to quickly wrap things up without actually tying up loose ends.

I bumped the rating just a tad because I did like the narrator for the audiobook - thought she did a great job especially with all of the accents!

My pick for book club this month so we’ll see what everyone thinks 👀

ASK NOT by Maureen Callahan
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

WOW. I knew a good amount about the Kennedy family, but this deep dive into the decades of tragedies and horrors that happened to women involved with the Kennedy men brought so much more to light. A horrible family that perpetuated misogyny, sexual assault, abuse, and belittlement of women & yet still to this day the Kennedys are fawned over and idolized.

I know there are some criticisms of this book and the author, in particular for her “creative license” and past associations with DailyMail and Megyn Kelly, so I’m definitely trying to take that into account when accepting everything in this book at face value. Regardless of whether any of the author’s tellings of these stories were exaggerated or fluffed, the true theme remains: the Kennedy men were disgusting people at their core & their intentionally malicious choices negatively impacted SO many women and people, for generations to come

I do wish the book was organized slightly different - it wasn’t chronological, it wasn’t really grouped by Kennedy family member, it was just kind of all over the place which made it hard to keep up with as an audiobook. Especially when every generation had at least one John, Jack, Robert, whofuckingever - I couldn’t keep them straight lmao

YOU WANNA BE ON TOP? By Sarah Hartshorne
⭐️⭐️⭐️

Overall a quick and easy audiobook but this honestly fell kind of flat for me.

I’m always interested in behind the scenes non-fiction books, especially when it’s about a TV show I was obsessed with and impacted a lot of our childhoods. It was interesting learning some of the production ins and out, and definitely really disgusting to hear further confirmation of how poorly the contestants were treated and how their mental health was manipulated while on the show.

I didn’t love some of the editing choices, but this obviously isn’t a literary masterpiece so maybe I should reset my expectations lol
