Runner’s interference is called here to end the championship game.

This is a tough call and it’s a call that can’t be reviewed. It’s all umpire discretion.

A runner can be called out for interference if they hinder, impede, confuse, or obstruct a fielder who is attempting to make a play, even if no physical contact occurs. The last part is the biggest take away- physical contact does not need to occur in order for it to be interference. I teach my defenders to go through the runner if they need to so there’s zero confusion if a runner interferes.

Working on angles with the V drill.

This drill is all about creating the right angle to cut the ball off instead of stepping across your body. I’m hitting balls left and right without telling the athlete which direction it’s coming, forcing them to react. As you move, use your opposite foot to open your hips (moving left = open with your right foot, moving right = open with your left foot).

Focus on taking one strong, wide directional step instead of a bunch of small baby steps.

Use a visual like a wall that is right in front of you. As you’re driving through the ball, stay behind the wall. Make sure front side is nice and firm.

A fun fielding drill to get the littles moving and to go get the ball.

Set up a line of cones and have them start on their stomach right behind the cones. Say go and immediately roll the ball. The athlete will have to get up quick and go in front of the cones to field the ball. I love to have them start on the ground because it forces them to stay light and quick and get moving in order to field the ball in front of the cones.
