$Here’s another sketch I did as an assignment during my art course. This one was all about practicing how to shade three completely different materials — because apparently, you can’t just shade everything the same way. 😭 The banana peel was matte, so I had to figure out how to make it feel like a banana peel through shading. The lip gloss was a mix of glass and steel, which meant figuring out reflections and those sharper highlights. And then there was the water spray bottle — plastic, with water inside and that slight refraction where the straw/pipe appears broken or distorted through the water. So I had to figure out how to show that too. It was basically an exercise in observing how light behaves differently on different surfaces. But honestly… my personal favourite is the banana peel. 😂 It just looks SO satisfying to look at. #artistsoninstagram #mehakfatimaarts #sketch #shading #artdiary Which one is your favorite? by @mehakfatimaarts$

After making around 6 oil paintings, I wanted to give acrylics a try… except I had absolutely no idea how acrylics worked. 😭

I couldn’t quite grasp that they don’t blend the same way oils do, so instead I basically started playing with the paint — adding random colours, using rough brushstrokes and experimenting with its texture.

And somehow… I loved what was happening.

It started looking almost like pastel work, so I decided to lean into it rather than fight it. I also added modelling paste to create more texture and give parts of the painting that “coming alive out of the canvas” feeling. 🌸

I wanted this painting to make someone look at it and immediately think: wow, this feels so calm and full of life.

I chose hummingbirds because, to me, they represent finding beauty in the smallest things. And I especially loved the flowers — how they bring so much colour and life into the scene.

I wanted to capture that feeling of simply being surrounded by nature and letting yourself enjoy its beauty, colour and serenity.

Hence the name: Humming in Nature. 🐦🌸

Ever since my teacher told me that seascapes and sailboats are a classic type of painting, I had it in my mind that I HAD to paint one. 😭

I was trying to use these 3 months of painting to learn the basics of different subjects — landscape ✔️ animal ✔️ still life ✔️ portrait ✔️ …and seascape was basically the last one left.

So I thought, okay, I’ve painted an animal, I’ve painted a human… surely a sea and a boat can’t be THAT difficult. 😭

And boyy I was wrong.

I really wanted the sea to look realistic, but I just couldn’t get it right. I didn’t have the technique yet, and all the calmness I started with slowly disappeared.

And then came the rage.

“This is such an important piece. It’s a MASTER’S painting. I need to get this right. Why can’t I?!”

Hence the name: Storm after the Calm. 🌊

After repeatedly struggling, I started carefully observing my teacher’s brushwork and finally began understanding the basic techniques needed to create movement in the sea.

The clouds were another battle. I tried different brushes, even my fingers, and still wasn’t happy with them.

Until my teacher told me to stop staring at the clouds individually and observe the whole painting — the clouds, the sea, and the boat together.

And suddenly… I got it.

The clouds actually looked good. 😭

Sometimes when you stare at one little part for too long, you completely lose sight of the bigger picture.

And honestly, I think that applies to more than just painting. 🤍
