A little look inside some of our classes. 🥋

There is always plenty happening.

Learning new skills, repeating the basics, listening, improving, having a laugh and getting a little better each time.

What I love most is seeing every child on their own journey.

Some are building confidence.
Some are learning to focus.
Some are becoming more comfortable speaking up.
Some are just learning that it is okay to make mistakes and keep going.

That is what our classes are really about.

Karate is the vehicle, but the growth that happens around it is what makes it so rewarding to watch. by @mekakarate

This one is a little more personal.

I wanted to share a bit about who I am, where my own karate journey started, and what eventually led me to create Meka Karate.

Karate has been a huge part of my life for a very long time, but over the years I realised the biggest lessons I took from it weren’t really about punches, kicks or winning competitions.

They were about confidence, resilience, discipline, learning to believe in yourself and understanding that when something gets hard, you don’t have to give up.

Those lessons shaped me, and they’re a big part of why Meka Karate exists today.

We’ve built our program around using karate as a tool to help parents develop those same qualities in their children and help kids become the confident, capable people we already know they can be.

So here’s a little bit of the story behind Meka Karate, and why we do what we do. 🥋 by @mekakarate

We talk to our students all the time about focus, repetition and continuing to improve.

But as instructors, we have to live that ourselves too.

This is Sensei Kristane putting in the work, practising, repeating and always looking for that next little improvement.

Karate is a journey that never really ends.

There is always something to refine, something to sharpen and something new to learn.

And I think that is one of the most important things we can show our students.

We are not asking them to do something we are not willing to do ourselves.

Keep practising.
Keep learning.
Keep improving. 🥋 by @mekakarate

As parents, we can’t be there for every hard moment our kids will face.

There will be times they feel nervous, get something wrong, lose, struggle or have to work something out on their own.

What we can do is help them build the belief now that they can handle those moments.

That’s one of the biggest things I love about karate.

Kids get to experience challenge in a positive environment.

They learn that getting something wrong doesn’t mean they stop.

They adjust, try again and keep moving forward.

And over time, that starts to become part of how they see themselves.

“I’ve done hard things before. I can do this too.”

That’s the kind of confidence that can stay with them well beyond karate. 🥋 by @mekakarate

One thing I’ve learnt from teaching kids is that confidence usually isn’t the first thing they need.

Trust comes first.

Before a child is willing to step forward, try something new or push through something uncomfortable, they need to feel like they’re in the right place and the person guiding them is on their side.

That’s why we put so much importance on getting to know each child before expecting too much from them.

Once that trust starts to build, we can challenge them a little more.

And that’s where the growth starts.

Not by making everything easy.

But by helping them feel comfortable enough to have a go, even when they’re not completely sure of themselves yet. 🥋 by @mekakarate

Grading at Mulgrave is always a reminder that the belt is only one part of the achievement.

The bigger win is seeing a child grow in confidence, commitment and belief in themselves.

And parents play such a huge role in making that possible.

Thank you to our Mulgrave parents for continuing to support, encourage and push your children, and for trusting us to help them along the way. 🥋 by @mekakarate

Some kids just have a lot of energy.

They’re curious, social, loud, expressive, always moving… and honestly, that can be a great thing.

The goal isn’t to take that away.

It’s to help them learn how to use it.

When that energy starts turning into focus, self-control, leadership and effort, you can really see a child change.

Not less personality.

Just more direction.

And sometimes the child who seems like they have the most energy to manage ends up becoming the one who brings the most energy to everyone else. 🥋 by @mekakarate

There were plenty of proud kids at our Sunbury grading, but there were also plenty of proud parents standing beside them.

And rightly so.

You’re the ones who see everything that happens before that grading moment.

The practice, the nerves, the difficult days and the small improvements that eventually add up to something bigger.

Thank you to our Sunbury parents for supporting your children and trusting us to help them keep moving towards the person you know they can become. 🥋 by @mekakarate

Such a proud moment for our Mount Waverley students after grading.

But behind every achievement like this, there is so much support that people don’t always see.

Parents helping them stay committed, encouraging them when things feel hard, and reminding them why they started.

To our Mount Waverley parents, thank you for being there every step of the way and for trusting us to help your children keep growing, improving and pushing towards their potential. 🥋 by @mekakarate

One thing I’ve seen a lot teaching kids is that the moment after they get something wrong can matter just as much as getting it right.

Because they can take that mistake in two very different ways.

“I’m not good at this.”

Or…

“I’m not there yet.”

That difference matters.

A lot of it comes down to what happens next.

Do they have someone helping them understand what went wrong?

Do they get the chance to practise it again?

Do they feel encouraged to come back and have another go?

That’s why I think mistakes are such an important part of learning.

We don’t want kids to be afraid of getting things wrong.

We want them to understand that mistakes are part of getting better.

In karate, at school, and in life. 🥋 by @mekakarate

One thing I think we sometimes get wrong about confidence is thinking it always has to look loud.

It doesn’t.

Sometimes confidence is the quiet child who feels nervous, but still has a go.

Sometimes it’s the child who would rather stay at the back, but takes that step forward anyway.

Sometimes it’s simply making a mistake, taking a breath and trying again.

For me, confidence isn’t about turning every child into the loudest person in the room.

It’s about helping them become more comfortable in who they are, while also learning that they can step forward when the moment asks them to.

That’s real confidence to me.

Not being fearless.

Just knowing you can keep moving, even when you feel nervous.

That’s what we’re trying to build at Meka, one small step at a time. 🥋 by @mekakarate
