🎤 Mel E. Logan is a Vienna-based artist whose pioneering work in sound sculpture and performance has secured her international standing. A founding member of the Electronic music and fine art crossover genre Electroclash, she co-built the iconic collective Chicks on Speed while studying painting at Munich’s Akademie der Bildenden Künste in the 1990s. Logan’s practice seamlessly traverses the boundaries between the visual and the sonic. Her work utilizes unique tools to investigate subjects through technological and ecological translation. Antennas have been a part of her practice since 2020 when she built an installation for the Deutscheliteraturmuseum Marbach am Necker. For this she also collaborated with a local chorus youth chorus who performed a series of songs with antenna pieces playing.

Logan @mel_e_logan is represented by Galerie Gisela Clement in Bonn and holds the position of Senior Artist at the University of Applied Arts Vienna (Die Angewandte).

(Interactive Sonic Sculpture of Four Antennas to be Activated by the Visitors)

🎼 Antenna in the Mud encourages humans working together. In order to hear the whole composition, the sculpture requires collaboration between four people activating the four Antennas.

The perfomance will take place within the conference A Space in a Place It is Not, on 5th of December 2025 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague @avu_prague, AVU Veletržní building, Veletržní 826/61170 00 Prague 7.

A perfect time laps to make new kinetic pieces. #antenna in the mud was exhibited this summer at SP_ACE. The interactive sound piece will be flying to Bonn to Gallery Gisela Clement.

Many worlds and works interacting: the pieces are drawings, paintings, video projection, and interactive sound sculptures the visitors activate by way of antennas, theremin-like sound players. The exhibition’s landscapes and smoky worlds are derived from a very deep dive into body liquids and audio activation, which, in our daily lives, are hidden from sight. As gut bacteria become fantasy birds, Demodex, the microscopic parasites, take on a humanoid depiction and wear jewelry. Why not? After all, it is common knowledge that bacteria are polite and social beings. A non-cooperative bacterium gets the ‘cold shoulder’, a statement by scientists studying bacterial interactions. They come to the conclusion that resource sharing and group work are more ancient, more connected systems of life than those of humans. Marchantia, the plant which is being looked at as the plant which bridges aquatic life to land colonization of first life forms, appears in thick oil paintings, a portrait of ancestry. Logan gathers collaborations and sketches of Chimera and expanded life, recent sound recordings and early collaborations, gathered and blended in an art-science world more connected to the ‘Salon’ rather than to art being pressed into what an idea of science and truth is. Song compositions are generally for human enjoyment and differ in style of taste and sometimes are created with a certain age group in mind. Mel e Logan has stepped beyond these perimeters and composed musical pieces for the enjoyment of the human bacteria in our bodies, the human micro-biome.You might think of sound bathes which are known for activating the bodies resonance, as a health measure and a a neurological reset this has become a known method of healing world wide. Logan has gone a step deeper, these resonances are focused not on the human ear – what they sound like, but rather how the sounds affect the cells, the microbes. With the piece Microbial Disco Soundtrack Mel e Logan has composed musical compositions made to activate a happy microbiome

After reading publications such as Stefano Mancuso ‚The revolutionary Genius of Plants‘ Logan was fascinated by the studies of plants generating sound, as well as being affected by bird song and reacting to my opening pores for pollen and photosynthesis. Logan decided at this point that the human body’s culture of microbes must also be listening and be affected by sound frequencies. Without waiting for studies she composed pieces which are meant for tools in the lab for when this is being studied. Mostly utilizing chladni plates, the frequencies which are most effective in the creation of geometric designs. These frequencies are the basis of the musical pieces Logan invited the visitors to be participants in this experiment, please listen to the sound compositions while in the bath and give Logan a report of the resulting feelings In the exhibition the compositions are played on a retro style music player in the f taken in Wuhan, China by @mel_e_logan
