Nina Höll: When you hear the term federal feminism, what does it mean to you personally?

Melanie Thut: For me, federal feminism means combining the struggle for liberation with the political structure that can actually sustain it: a federal society and a state that enshrines freedoms and rights. It is about the emancipation of humanity through dismantling hierarchical structures between people, while always thinking intersectionally and recognising the specific struggles of different groups, especially women.

Die Absage von @bundeskanzler Friedrich Merz an eine vertiefte europäische Integration ist ein Schlag ins Gesicht unserer Generation.

Gerade in einer Zeit, in der Krieg, Klimakrise und wirtschaftliche Unsicherheit unsere Zukunft bedrohen, brauchen wir mehr Europa – nicht weniger. Wer glaubt, der nationale Alleingang könne diese Herausforderungen bewältigen, verkennt die Realität.

Merz sagt ganz offen: Er will die Bundeswehr zur „konventionell stärksten Armee Europas“ ausbauen.

Das heißt: Deutschland fokussiert sich auf militärische Stärke – aber ohne das notwendige Begleitprogramm zur politischen Integration Europas.

Wir brauchen endlich den nächsten Schritt: eine Europäische Verteidigungsunion, eine gemeinsame Armee, die Vollendung des Binnenmarkts und mehr Zusammenarbeit über Grenzen hinweg. Nur so sichern wir Frieden, Wohlstand und Freiheit in einer globalisierten Welt.

Die Worte von Merz senden ein verheerendes Signal an unsere europäischen Partner:innen. Wenn Deutschland nicht mit Mut, Zuversicht und europäischem Geist vorangeht, fehlt der Motor für die Reformen, die unsere Zukunft prägen müssen.

Wir lassen uns von Rückschritten nicht entmutigen. Wir kämpfen weiter für ein föderales, starkes und solidarisches Europa – unser Europa der Zukunft!

Mel kandidiert beim Bundeskongress erneut für das Amt der Bundesvorsitzenden der JEF Deutschland!
Ihr Weg in der JEF begann 2018 im Kreisverband Heidelberg/Mannheim. Danach war sie Kreisvorsitzende, Delegierte im Trinationalen Rat der JEF Oberrhein, Beisitzerin für Internationales im Bundesvorstand und Koordinatorin der Europawahlkampagne #EurHope im Federal Committee der JEF Europe. Seit 2024 ist sie JEF Deutschland Bundesvorsitzende. 🇪🇺

Full circle European moment 🥹🇪🇺♥️

Coming back to visit my family in Romania has always been a little moment of reflection for me. Especially when I come back to the village where my mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and her mother were all born 🥹

Growing up, I got to see this place change. I remember when some of the old dirt roads turned into paved streets thanks to Romania joining the EU and EU funding.

And this year was crazyyyy because my granny’s house even got an EU badge now 😂🇪🇺 A few months ago, she got solar panels through EU funding, which means she basically has free energy now. Such a huge relief, especially for life in the countryside.

I love moments like this because they make Europe feel so tangible. Not just something you hear about in Brussels or in the news, but something that can actually show up in people’s everyday lives — even in a tiny village in the Romanian countryside 💚

I also love spending time here, in this little oasis, and talking to people in the village. Three years ago, I did ethnographic fieldwork here for my first Master’s, interviewing women about their experiences after the fall of communism. And now it’s honestly so cute to bump into them on the street and just keep talking like no time has passed ✨

Ai în plan o seară de marți cu o cafea bună și o discuție care chiar contează? ☕✨

JEF Talks revine cu o invitată din Germania! Melanie Thut, Președinta JEF Germany, cea mai mare secțiune din rețeaua Young European Federalists, vine la Chișinău pentru o seară despre federalism, feminism și fraternitate. 💚🇪🇺

Cum arată activismul federalist în Germania și ce putem învăța de acolo? Vino cu întrebările tale și află direct de la Melanie!

We’re so done hearing these EU myths.

Myth 1: “Brussels dictates everything.”

Reality: EU laws are made by the European Parliament (directly elected by citizens), the Council (national governments), and the European Commission. Member states help make the rules - it’s not “Brussels deciding.”

Myth 2: “The EU is too weak to be a geopolitical player.”

Reality: The EU is one of the world’s largest economies, a major trading power, and a global regulator. It negotiates trade deals, imposes sanctions, provides humanitarian and financial aid, and increasingly cooperates on security and defence. It’s not a single state, so it doesn’t act exactly like one - but it still has significant global influence.

Myth 3: “The EU wants to erase our identity.”

Reality: The EU’s motto is “United in Diversity.” It doesn’t replace national identities. Countries keep their own language, culture, traditions, education systems, and national governments while cooperating on shared issues. But they are stronger working together and learning from each other.

Myth 4: “The EU doesn’t affect our lives anyway.”

Reality: It does - whether it’s free roaming, consumer rights, safer products, cheaper travel, clean water standards, student exchanges like Erasmus+, or the ability to live and work across the EU. We are used to having these things in our lives. But they are not guaranteed - they were fought for over many years, and they are not set in stone. If anti-European forces come to power, these rights and forms of cooperation can be rolled back. That is why we have to stand up for the EU and Europe every day, defend democracy, and work towards making Europe stronger and more capable of taking action. by @mel_thut

💔🏳️‍🌈

Wir hatten so einen tollen Tag auf der Pride in Berlin und dann: so ein dramatisches Ende. Langsam kommen die Worte jetzt ein paar Tage später wieder und es gibt so viel zu sagen.

Queere Räume sind Räume der Freiheit, Vielfalt, Liebe und der Selbstverwirklichung. Als proeuropäischer Jugendverband @jef.deutschland sind wir letztes Wochenende gemeinsam auf die Pride gegangen, manche von uns als Teil der queeren Community, andere als starke Verbündete. Ich war gerührt von den schönen Emotionen, die wir alle gemeinsam empfanden, für manche von uns war es die erste Pride.

Politisch stellten wir bei einer kleinen Kundgebung vor allem die desaströsen Kürzungen für Mittel des queeren Jugendverbands @lambda.bund in den Vordergrund und betonten die europäische transnationale Perspektive auf den Schutz von queerem Leben.

Kaum ein paar Stunden später wurde genau dieser Schutz durch den islamistischen Anschlag von Abdul B brutal zerstört. Das kostete Menschenleben und zahlreiche Verletzte.

Was uns Kraft gibt, ist unsere Community. Jugendverbände schaffen Horte der Sicherheit, Gemeinschaft und Entwicklung. Ich bin so unendlich dankbar, dass ich Teil davon sein darf. ❤️

Als Betroffene werde ich nie aufhören, mich für den Schutz von Minderheiten und ein freies Leben für alle einzusetzen. Wir lassen uns von Demokratiefeinden nicht unser offenes und buntes Europa kaputt machen.

We didn’t choose to fight nationalism and hate because it’s trendy. We don’t want to be divided neither by nation, nor by gender or fear. As friends we keep showing up together anyway. Standing where history once tried to erase unity, and rebuilding it anyway. Sisterhood over hate. Solidarity over borders. That’s our Europe.🇪🇺❤️‍🔥
