When I moved for college, I was so sad that i’d be moving to a town that had no Barnes and Noble. Lucky for me, 2 months into moving, Barnes and Noble announced that they were opening a new location in Gainesville!

This location is MASSIVE and has so many novelty items. the lay out of the store is great and there is such a large selection of books/special editions. There’s also a Starbucks with a study area which is great in a college town!

My boyfriend bought An Atlas of Extinct Countries, Wool, and I Heard You Paint Houses. I bought The Trail by Kafka.

for those of you who don’t know i’m puerto rican and every chance i get i go back to mi isla bella (translation: my beautiful island). this spring break i went and i was determined to find a book store near my aunt’s house. this is a used book store near Rincon that sells many special edition classics and niche books (like the one i bought which is shown at the end). i love puerto rico and i love books, so this was a match made in heaven for me <3

also the clips at the end of the beach were from the beach house we stayed at for spring break. everywhere in puerto rico is beautiful if you guys are able to visit i would encourage you to do so!

man this orwell guy really has something going for him. in all seriousness there’s an evident reason why orwell is one of the most famous classic writers of all time. i read animal farm in 10th grade and while it was a very good book i feel like 1984 is his tour de force.

˗ˏˋsummaryˎˊ˗
1984 takes place in a dystopian world where everything is highly supervised by an overseer called Big Brother (fun fact this is where the phrase “big brother is always watching” comes from). The main character,Winston, acts like the perfect citizen in Oceania, but in private he detests the system he works for. One day a girl catches his attention and he realizes that he needs to learn more about her. What ensues is a story about human resilience in the face of tyranny, surveillance, and the fear of human thought.

this book truly is intoxicating. many classics to me feel like they drag, but i was hooked every second of this book. Orwell also is so imaginative and he is so incredibly detailed. i think what also makes this book so incredible is that this book was Orwell’s last before we died at the age of 46 years old from tuberculosis. he was writing this book like if he was running out of time. he needed to share the message he had before he passed and i am so glad he was able to because he gave us one of the best books of our time.

i’ve been in new york city the past couple of days for a school trip and i forced my group to go to a book store!! this has to be one of my favorite bookstores i’ve visited. although i wasn’t able to stay for long since we had to keep moving, i was obsessed. they had an amazing selection of books (i bought two) and really cute bookish things like journals, highlighters, pens, etc. they also have tshirts and totes for the book store (i bought a tote). my favorite thing about the bookstore was the women on the verge section depicted in the first slide. my favorite genre is mentally ill woman in the city and this genre met that criteria. if you’re in the chinatown area, i totally recommend coming to McNally Jackson Books Prince Street.

˗ˏˋsummaryˎˊ˗
Address Unknown is a true story about two German men who decide to leave Germany and start an art gallery in San Francisco after World War 1. One of them, named Martin Schulse, decided to return to Germany in 1932, with his wife and kids. His business partner, Max Einsenstein, a German Jew remained in San Francisco to run the art gallery. Max and Martin both stayed in contact writing letters to each other. The book is a collection of these letters written and is utilized to warn people of the harms a totalitarian government may bring.

As the story progresses, we see Martin grow cold towards Max and becoming more fond of Adolf Hitler. This causes a strain in their relationship and eventually is the cause of its demise.

˗ˏˋreview ˎˊ˗
This book truly is a fundamental read. While it is only about 70 pages, it is moving with every word. Taylor writes this book with the purpose of exposing the threat that totalitarian governments bring to humanity. This book is especially important when considering all the regimes throughout Europe in the time is was published (1939). At the time of it being published, people had only heard whispers of the horrors being committed by the Nazis, so this book brought that to light as well. What stuck the most with me was how quickly Martin changed. At the beginning of the book he was loving and kind. By the end, however, he was heartless and solely cared for himself and the reich.

The reason there isn’t a star rating is because I don’t like giving star ratings to books that deal with real life events, especially events that involve such tragedies like the holocaust.
