That time my duo sat in with a band in Lubbock and Joe Ely came out of the private lounge to listen.He told us we sounded great, asked where we were from — kind, unassuming, and fully present.For anyone who doesn’t know, Joe Ely is a cornerstone of Texas and American songwriting — part of the Lubbock scene with Jimmie Dale Gilmore and Butch Hancock, and part of the wider Texas songwriter tradition that includes Townes Van Zandt and Guy Clark. A lifelong road dog, poet, and truth-teller, he’s spent decades putting the song first. His work has never chased trends, only honesty.I loved this moment from a recent article about him. In a 1994 interview with The Los Angeles Times, he said:“I never considered ‘success’ as a real gauge of anything… Just last night, backstage at this place in Davis, I guess some musician had drawn a picture of this scared musician with great big eyes looking at this signpost between ‘fame’ and ‘obscurity.’ And I thought, ‘Man, what does that have to do with music?’”And this is something he’s said that’s always stayed with me:“I think there’s just a lot of people that kind of need somewhere to lean or something to lean on, and there’s nothing like a song to give you a little bit of stability.”That night meant more than I probably realized at the time.
