If you’re in Philly, go check out @sean9lugo’s gallery show (a collaboration with his son) up at @wpfineart through October 31. (And, of course, go on a scavenger hunt across the city for his unmistakable wheatpastes)

So fun to have been able to watch my friend @grayinmotion painting her first public mural for NOMA in Color earlier this month.

Swipe to read Gray’s artist statement about her work “Tiger Calm: A Healing Salve”

I asked her about her experience and she said, “It was such a privilege to create something in such a beloved part of DC. Getting up close and personal with the MBT and knowing that my art and message of healing will be seen by so many people passing by is really personally fulfilling”

Tiger Calm: A Healing Salve

“During this tumultuous, tense, and violent season in America, I wanted to explore the idea of healing through public art. Tiger Balm is a nostalgic remedy for me, and the composition of this mural was inspired by the signature hexagonal bottle and yellow-and-blue label from my childhood. The label’s flying tiger has been replaced by one at rest, flanked by the words “Resistance” and “Resilience.” Healing chamomile and calendula flowers adorn the sides, along with stars and decorative elements that spark joy.” - @grayinmotion taken in Alethia Tanner Park by @melaniephung

Mariano “Brocha” Arrien shares his inspiration for his latest mural on the Metro Branch Trail: an homage to local bike culture and famous female cycle track athletes from the DMV.

Tim Cunningham (@cunn1nghammer) putting up his mandala mural for the NOMA in Color mural festival with spray paint in lush layers and fine details. Can control for days!
.
When I asked him about his art, he said “it’s about bringing a little bit of joy, inspiration, and creativity to people. We need more creativity in the world. The mind is sacred and the creative space in the mind is like a temple.”

Last weekend, the Adams Morgan neighborhood came together to celebrate the unveiling of a new mural by artist, activist, and organizer Shani Shih (@shanishih).

In her speech (excerpted below) she reminds all of us that art and artists have the power to influence, not just reflect, the society we are a part of:

“Public art can serve to whitewash, enact profit agendas, enforce narratives that serve the violence of the system we live under, obscure the lived realities of the working class and the poor . On the flip side, it can also be used to make the invisible visible, to challenge. To disrupt.

As I’ve worked on this mural, thousands more have been abducted by ICE, our streets are more militarized than ever, police have continued to brutalize our neighbors and youth.

This mural directly uplifts the many protectors, agitators, innovators, cultural workers in our midst - those at the forefront of keeping our city vibrant, healthy, real, a place where people can live with dignity. Something that even the powers-that-be can’t erase” by @melaniephung

A small selection of art on display at @honfleurgallery right now. The show OUT OF CHAOS was curated by @luis202artist to showcase DC artists who have at least 15 years of graffiti background. “Their work reflects resilience, transformation, and the enduring influence of graffiti and hip-hop culture on contemporary art.”
