The UK Games Industry Workforce Demographics Survey has been released, and it is unfortunately showing an unsurprising but troubling trend.We are moving backwards.When you look closely at the data, it reveals the age-old, systemic trap: ‘Last in, First out.’Entry-level hiring has all but ground to a halt. By shutting down junior-level pathways, we are actively blocking new, diverse talent from entering the room in the first place.The industry has faced so much upheaval, including massive downsizing and a loss of jobs. These are the exact tiers where diversity is currently concentrated; the massive wave of redundancies has disproportionately impacted diverse professionals.Unsurprisingly, the data shows that senior roles, which remain dominated by older, less demographically diverse men, have seen an increase.This is a glaring disparity and an indication that some roles are above reproach; in essence we are preserving the status quo at the top level while allowing the more diverse foundation to erode beneath it.As most of you know, I am an optimist; to work in the diversity and inclusion sector, you have to be.While the survey paints a picture of an industry going backwards instead of forwards, the most pressing question we face right now is quite obvious: what can we all do to ensure that the next survey represents everyone?We don't need to reinvent the wheel. We just need to back the people who are already on the ground doing the heavy lifting.Established organisations are already doing the vital work to ensure our future represents all of us. There has been a slow and insidious move to have everything digitalised for several years now. This is move by Sony PlayStation is merely the needle that broke the camel’s back.On paper, digital media makes a lot of sense. It’s usually cheaper and it’s also environmentally friendly. There are many pros to this and we have all enjoyed being able to download a game almost instantly when it releases from the comfort of our own homes.So why are millions of gamers in an uproar over an ecosystem they already use?For me, the answer boils down to two fundamental principles: transparency and choice.Let me break that down.I grew up in the Blockbuster generation. On a Friday night, you would go out and rent a movie or a game for a specific price, keep it for the weekend, and return it. Everyone understood the assignment. All parties agreed to a temporary loan.Sometimes, if you really loved that movie or game, you went down to HMV to buy it. That physical disc went onto your shelf, and it became yours. All parties agreed to a set price and you owning the game. I have a mammoth physical collection spanning years from the PS1 to the PS5. Why we can't have women in games. Since last week, we have had some amazing announcements, one of them was God of War: Laufey. We saw the trailer and felt hyped. Surely, after playing as Kratos for so long, which we all enjoyed, it would be nice to put a fresh spin on things. Then, of course, came the sharp online discourse. For years, we have had a multitude of games featuring male protagonists; they were flawed, heroic, angry, vulnerable - you name it, we have had it. We celebrated their stories, but more importantly, we connected with them. We never, not once stopped to question if they 'belonged' in the world they inhabited.Yet, time and time again, when a woman is featured as the main protagonist, a very different conversation emerges. To break this down in simple terms: a man is the default. A woman is a political statement.We saw the exact same thing happen with Ghost of Yōtei, an immediate backlash from certain parts of the internet that branded the game with a scarlet letter and accused the studio of pandering. We never even get to discuss the gameplay, storytelling; instead, the focus is firmly fixated on who is allowed to be the hero. It's exhausting that we keep having the same conversation over and over again. But if we don't stop calling out what we can clearly see as wrong, then my fear is that things will regress.Please check out the full article here. Hosted the first edition of Games X Nerd CultureI'm a recent games dev graduate now Alumni & I plan to shine a beacon of opportunities to the games department as well as students & graduates at @ravensbourneuk . Great support from @ravelate_ldn & thanks to everyone involved & appreciate the engagement throughout the whole event.
