Deadman Pass - After edit → Original shot Deadman Pass, previously named Crawford Hill, was given the name as a result of an attack during the Bannock War when a wagon being driven through the pass was killed by an Indigenous group near a reservation. The name was reinforced over the years while others were attempting to cross. In modern times, the highway has been built down a hill and into a valley. Coupled with the weather, the conditions of the road tend to complicate clear roads. Personally when I was on this road, it was terrifying with how dense the fog was. The last two photos are courtesy of my iPhone 12 max pro (2021). Friends of the Trees - Mt. Rainier + Cascades 𓅫 Canada Jay at Mt. Si in the Cascade Range: A monogamous species that mate for life unless widowed; then they will pair with another mate. Males construct the nests insulating it with the cocoons of Forest Tent Caterpillars. Referred to as Whiskeyjack (Wisakedjak) by several Indigenous nations. An omen of good fortune. Mischievous birds that are known to steal food from humans and do not change eating behaviors when being watched by humans. Are not forgetful of who is linked with food. North American lumberjacks say that lumberjacks are reincarnated as Canada Jays. ᨒ ོ ☼ Cascade Timberline Grasshopper on the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail at Naches Peak: Flightless grasshopper of the Cascade mountains. Frequently found around Mt. rainier. The name indicates: Cascade = Cascade mountains in the PNW; Timberline = lives in alpine areas above the treeline. There isn’t much info on this critter. State Route 20 (SR 20) aka North Cascades Highway - Washington State’s longest highway ranging at about 436 miles/702 km taking you from US 101 to US 2 near the Idaho state border. It was originally used by local Indigenous tribes as a trading route from Washington’s Eastern Plateau country to the Pacific Coast for more than 8,000 years until white settlers arrived looking for gold after the Gold Rush. SR 20 is one of the oldest state roads in Washington, and since 1895, funding has been pushed and pulled in all directions to make the modern road accessible for businesses, visitors, residents. Several Indigenous tribes such as the following have utilized and created the trails for this road: Upper Skagit Tribe; Sauk-Suiattle Indian Tribe; Samish Indian Reservation; Swinomish Indian Tribal Community; Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation; and more. “On February 17, 2020, the Samish Indian Nation was awarded $760,000 in federal funding through the United States Tribal Transportation Program (TTP) Safety Fund.
