Day 2 - Iona

Well whoever ordered the blue skies and sunshine for the West of Scotland today - I seriously owe you one. Probably the best weather I have EVER had in Scotland - as Phil Collins would say 'No Jacket Required'.

Iona is lovely. The Abbey there was started by St Columba in 563 AD. Yer man was from Donegal and I lit a wee candle for Glen in the Abbey Church to acknowledge a month since he left us.

I took these pictures in St Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin in November 2017 when Glen played a show there as part of the Jonathan Swift Festival.

Today I will return to St Patrick’s Cathedral to bid Glen farewell.

He was the captain of the good ship Hansard, and we willingly jumped aboard to go wherever Glen wanted to take us at any given time and it was always a privilege.

What I don’t think people have fully appreciated until now was that the good ship Hansard was in fact a supertanker filled with thousands and thousands of people.

It never felt like a supertanker because Glen always made it intimate and personal - he played a song you asked to hear, he encouraged you, he took the piss out of your Australian accent and told you things were going ‘straight to the pool room’, he took time to listen and console you when things in your life weren’t great and he would surprise you with a thoughtful gift for no reason.

Now, like Fitzcarraldo, we shall have to pull the supertanker that is the good ship Hansard over an Everest-sized mountain of grief......but we shall be doing it together with big love in our hearts. by @melbourneflower

There are times in life when you feel the full force of a word.

The word bereft means, amongst other things, being deprived or robbed of an important thing that you need or expect to have.

And here we now all are - bereft of Glen.

The man was a joy creator in the purest sense.

I am finding it very difficult right now to process this news. I keep hoping I am having a bad dream and that the hollow feeling of immense loss which currently fills my soul isn’t real.

There is much more to say, but at the moment I will simply send all my love to Maire, Christy and all of Glen’s family, band mates and friends and my deep gratitude to Glen who has over the last 20 years filled my life with joy on more occasions than I can remember.

Part 2 - We had such a brilliant day today at Arundel Castle - the weather was amazing and the views inside and out were spectacular. Highly recommend this as a day trip (as long as the trains back to London don't shit themselves!) @arundelcastleuk by @melbourneflower

The amazing @courtneymarieandrews opened up for @glenhansard on his recent UK tour. I cannot tell you how impressive she was and if you do anything today then go and listen to her track ‘Let The Good One Go’ - it is an absolute corker! #courtneymarieandrews @alberthallmcr by @melbourneflower

Here’s a few shots from soundcheck at @alberthallmcr with @glenhansard and band. This terrific bunch of people have so much fun together which is very evident when they perform. There’s a lot of hard work undertaken on the road - by both the band and their stellar support crew. Huge thanks to them for having me along at a few shows on the recent UK tour. It was the last show of the @glenhansard UK tour at the @roundhouseldn last night in Camden. This venue holds iconic status in London’s Rock’n’Roll history for good reason and the performance lived up to all expectations. Manchester really brought it last night for @glenhansard and band at the @alberthallmcr - the air in this gorgeous room was immediately electric and brought on an entirely spontaneous change to the setlist with a particularly boisterous Revelate kicking off proceedings. Things just got better from that and ended with a number of crowd members providing assists for ‘Leave’ and ‘When Your Mind’s Made Up’.
