Can you burp? Most people never think about it unless they can’t!
This is a manometry test @melbswallow for Retrograde Cricopharyngeal Dysfunction (R-CPD) where the upper oesophageal muscle fails to relax, preventing gas from escaping. This can lead to bloating, chest pressure, gurgling noises and inability to burp. The test can provide valuable evidence for treatment options such as botox.

This latest research examines speech pathologists’ evaluation of structural abnormalities on VFSS.
Findings highlight that SPs demonstrate strong accuracy in detecting the presence or absence of structural abnormalities, supporting their screening role - particularly when a radiologist is not present.
This study also identifies variability in structure-specific identification and biomechanical interpretation, reinforcing the need for targeted training and collaborative, multidisciplinary pathways.
Further strengthening team-based approaches in structural dysphagia management!

Pharyngeal manometry allows us to assess pressure generation across key regions of swallowing. Using high-resolution sensors and impedance tracking to evaluate with more precision across different consistencies and bolus sizes.
