A little flashback to when I had the opportunity to design this stunning kitchen for our Balmoral House Project (during my times with Living Space Constructions). This project was completed as part of a knockdown-rebuild project by architectural practice @chrofi.

The homeowners wanted an open-plan, minimalist space that would be functional and suitable for entertaining.

We came up with a design that included a hidden Butler's Pantry, where the entrance door blends in with the cabinetry in a dark contrasting tone to compliment the architectural features. The effective use of stone in the splashback and island anchors the space and works well with the flooring. I really enjoyed working on this project.

A closer look at our Freshwater living room joinery.

Designed to feel like a natural continuation of the adjoining kitchen, with generous storage and a bar nook.

Polytec Natural Oak Ravine, Champagne Quartzite and bronze-tinted mirror create a warm and refined finish.

A new project to share — East Ryde.

I have been working on the design of three bathrooms in this family home, each with its own needs and considerations.

Here’s a first look at the master ensuite, where we’ve been rethinking the layout, introducing softer curves and selecting materials that bring warmth and character to the space.

There’s quite a bit of thinking and planning that goes into a bathroom renovation before construction begins. It’s a part of the process I really enjoy — bringing together the practical requirements and the details that make a space feel personal.

The renovation is now underway, and I’ll be sharing more as the project progresses.

Sometimes the first idea isn’t necessarily the best solution.

While exploring the layout for this apartment laundry in Allawah, what initially seemed like a straightforward request became a process of balancing storage, functionality and the limitations of the existing space.

It’s often when you start exploring different possibilities that you discover what a space really needs.

A little insight into the design process at Melco Designs.

The most interesting flooring sample isn’t always the right choice for the home.

Sometimes a warmer timber or herringbone pattern brings the character a space needs. Other times, a quieter floor lets the existing features stand out.

Flooring helps bring everything together, and it’s a choice you’ll likely live with for years.

I compare it alongside the other finishes, considering the architecture, natural light and what we’re keeping. Then I take the shortlisted samples to site and check them again.

A combination that looks beautiful in the showroom needs to work in your home, too.

From concept to construction.

A look behind the scenes at the master bedroom joinery and dressing room—from material selections and drawings to installation.

Warm timber tones, glass-front cabinetry and stitched leather handles, with a curved island at the centre. Each element considered together, from how the storage would work to how the room would feel.

A few moments from the process, before the finished photographs.

A little reminder of the person behind Melco Designs

I’m Melanie, an interior designer specialising in kitchens, bathrooms, custom joinery and full-home renovations.

Most clients don’t come to me with everything figured out. They may have saved plenty of inspiration but still feel unsure about the layout, which materials work together, or how all the details will translate into their finished home.

My role is to bring clarity to those decisions, balancing function, warmth and character to create a home that feels considered, personal and genuinely suited to the way you live.

This is a real photograph taken at one of my completed projects. The image was lightly edited to remove another person from the background.

The client for this Bondi Beach bathroom wasn’t starting from scratch. She already knew she wanted more natural light at the vanity, with the mirror positioned between two new windows.

What she was still stuck on was the vanity itself—how the basin, drawers and storage should be arranged, and how it would all work beside the toilet.

That’s where I helped.

We worked through the vanity in detail, including open shelving at the left end so that a cupboard door wouldn’t open into—or hit—the toilet beside it.

I also helped her narrow down the materials and sourced options for the tiles, timber, benchtop and brushed-nickel fittings. Once those decisions were resolved, I prepared the drawings for her builder and trades.

Sometimes a client already has a good idea of what they want. They simply need help refining it, resolving the details and putting everything together so the renovation can move forward.

If you have ideas for your bathroom but are feeling stuck on the final decisions, this is something I can help with.

A client recently asked me whether timber look joinery should match the flooring or whether it’s better to create contrast, and if so, how much?

The short answer is no, they don’t need to match exactly. But there isn’t one rule. I usually start with the undertones and look at whether the finishes sit comfortably together. They don’t need to match exactly, but they should complement each other.

Then I consider the overall feeling I want to create in the space. For this compact kitchen, I’m looking for subtle variation rather than a strong contrast - enough to add depth while keeping the palette warm and cohesive.

And always compare real samples together, ideally in the light of the space.

Freshwater — Home Office / Guest Bedroom

The brief for this room was to create a practical home office for everyday use that could also become a comfortable guest bedroom when needed, with some much-needed additional storage.

To make the layout work, the existing air-conditioning unit was relocated to allow space for a Murphy bed with an integrated sofa. Open shelving on either side helps the joinery feel lighter within the room, while integrated downlights provide warm, practical lighting when the bed is in use.

On the opposite wall, the bespoke desk joinery makes the most of the natural light and ocean outlook, with drawers for filing, book shelves and dedicated printer storage.

A compact room designed to work in several different ways.
