The script of By Any Means came into my life at a pivotal stage. I didn’t know this idea had been brewing with Jamal for nearly two years. I’m extremely proud of him for creating and sharing a story that stays rooted and honest. As much as it is scary, we get to express ourselves however we want, choose how we see things, and share our experiences with the world. That freedom is a privilege and responsibility I never take lightly. As an Ecuadorian producer working with a Somali director, I don’t often see people like us in these spaces. Representation matters. Our stories matter. Being able to tell a story reflective of lived experience with a team that aligns behind the scenes made this journey even more meaningful. More than often, others try to tell these stories without alignment, and it shows.

Shot in two 14 hour days and carried through ten months of production, By Any Means became the longest and most meaningful project I’ve produced. The film grew alongside me and was made with care, intention, and commitment. Thank you to Jamal for trusting me and the process from start to finish. When someone asked at the screening what the hardest part was, I realized I don’t frame my work that way, what matters is the outcome and impact.

By Any Means screened to a sold out audience of 300+, with some standing just to be present. It gave me goosebumps that I continuously kept looking over my shoulder as if my eyes were deceiving me lol. Endless gratitude to our crew, Chifundo, Malak, Mohamud, Salman, Matthew, Heng, Amanda, Neo, Antonio, Ainne, Denzel, Nat, Yassin, Adriana, Janice, Alejandro, Marva, Fuad, Jenny, Nancy, Aaron, and Fartuun, a piece of you will forever be with BAM. Ahmed and Musaab, from audition tape to the screen, we couldn’t have imagined anyone else in your roles, thank you for making it yours. To everyone who showed up, supported, and believed in BAM, thank you. I hope this work inspires others, especially those who look like me and young creatives finding their footing, to believe the same. Respect the paths built before you and don’t be afraid to build your own. by @melevision
