What is “handmade”? A community discussion post.
Definitions from the dictionary:
Cambridge dictionary describes it as:
Made by someone using their hands rather than by using a machine.
Merriam webster describes it as: Made by hand or by a hand process.
Etsy describes it as:
Handmade on Etsy covers a broad spectrum. On one end we have the makers sellers who literally make their items with their own hands (or tools). On the other hand, we have designers - sellers who design their items, but rely entirely on the help of manufacturing partners to physically manufacture the items.
Why this post?
In recent months we have seen more and more AI ‘art’ emerging, but at the same time, AliExpress jewellery is also emerging from its depths again. Event organisers or stores have been claiming that all their vendors sell handmade items; but they don’t check whether that is really correct.
This creates a gap in prices and quality, between the artists who make everything by hand and people who buy AliExpress pendants and put them on a hook. This is therefore very unfair for the people who already get underpaid, most artists do not even make 8 to 15 euros per hour. There is also a clear discrepancy between people who see it as a hobby and people who have already grown it into a fulltime job. (Possibly out of need)
Yet, everyone influences the community, because if you ask 5 euros for your bootleg AliExpress jewelelry, they look at us strangely when we ask 15 euros for our work so that we can pay rent.
What does handmade mean for artists?
"Handmade items are items that are made without the use of factory- machinery, which means that the items are often made at home or in an individuals studio space."
"When it comes to artisan goods, the items are handillustrated by the artists who makes them. Very often, handmade items are of higher quality than factory-made items."
"Handmade means that you create an end product yourself with the tools you have."
