Reposting myself. Never forget.

September 10, 2001. A thunderstorm rolled in and the Yankees/Red Sox game was canceled. We went out for Thai food on 56th Street and watched the rain pour down while we were cozy in the window booth. The next morning, the sky was an extraordinarily clear blue. taken in New York, New York by @melindamanhattan

A pleasure to meet Takayuki Saito and have my Plotters personalized with his beautiful hand-lettering 🧡

Thanks to Takayuki-san for a “one-of-one” on the green liscio Plotter and to Amy Smilovic for coining the perfectly apt term, “Creative Pragmatist” 💚

#AnnieBissett, Secret Codewords of the NSA: A Primer (2013)

From @nypl:
A chance encounter with a newspaper article led Annie Bissett to an online database of more than 400 code words used by the National Security Agency (NSA), many of which were found in the files leaked by Edward Snowden in 2013. Inspired by the format of the preschool primer, Bissett created a visual alphabet of 26 NSA code words.
Some of the prints, like “dishfire,” are literal (and often funny) interpretations. In others, like the letter G, Bissett is more critical of the contemporary landscape of safety and surveillance. “Genie” is the NSA code name for a malware program that allows for American control of foreign computer systems. “There’s a saying that it’s hard to put a genie back in a bottle,” Bisset writes. “Malware can’t be put back in the bottle. The Snowden revelations can’t be put back in the bottle. And our personal data can’t be put back in the bottle either.” taken in New York Public Library Research by @melindamanhattan

Grateful for the opportunity to see this handwritten copy of the Declaration of Independence.

From @nypl: “The rare and remarkable version of the Declaration of Independence preserved in the Library’s collections is one of only a few surviving ‘fair copies’ handwritten by Thomas Jefferson. Before it was ratified on July 4, the Second Continental Congress made several changes to the text that was primarily drafted by Jefferson. A lengthy condemnation of the slave trade was removed, for example—an excision intended to appease delegates from Georgia and South Carolina. In the days after July 4, a distressed Jefferson wrote out several fair copies of his original text and sent them to five or six friends. He considered it important to preserve for posterity his objections to the slave trade, despite being a lifelong slaveholder himself. The Library’s copy is one of only a few copies that have survived.“ taken in NYPL The New York Public Library by @melindamanhattan
