There’s a comfort within the vibrant hues of the pause. When colors stretch along with time. And though we might not be the ones moving, we can stand still, and ride.

Yes I saw the blue tape. But it’s the glow that stopped me. The right time of day, the right angle of the sun, and this little street corner became beautiful.

Under the tarp, a few wires peeked out. I wondered if a recent storm left an electrical box damaged. But just like the definition of beauty, whatever this tarp concealed will remain a mystery.

Some news! 10 of my images placed in the 1839 Awards “Art of Storytelling” contest. I earned 2nd place (silver) in the Urban category, and Honorable Mention in the Portrait of a Place category.

“This contest recognizes exceptional talent that demonstrates the enduring power of the art of photography from around the world. With submissions received from 75 countries, the winning images are diverse and powerful.”

I’m over the moon! I’ve long admired this contest and it was such an honor to learn I’d placed. Each of these images means something deep to me. As I’ve built these collections and projects I’ve learned so much about my city and myself. I’m grateful for the chance to create, and so thankful for this community and all of your support. 🤍 by @melissafoxman

Bookstores. One of the last “third places.” Have you heard of this concept? We each have two main places where we spend most of our time. Home and work, or school and work. And we primarily interact with others at their homes, schools or work.

It’s only in the “third place,” where we can find genuine, unexpected connection. Somewhere neutral, intended for community. In this digital era more and more of these third places have gone, closed or shifted to phone-focused arenas like coffee shops. And yet, bookstores?

Do you feel it, when you walk by? The welcoming call of those stacks of stories. The smell that arises when flipping through a new book’s pages. And the din of our fellow humans, chatting with an employee or calling over a friend to read a passage. We need these third places, they greet us every time like an old friend.

The end is the beginning. This image has me quite nostalgic for these new year’s days. Feeling retrospective as we close one calendar and open the next in a single, familiar fluid motion.

Maybe it’s the soft curves. Or the glint of blue reflected off the top of that plinth stone. Even the yellow spotlight on the pavement is bright and yet unassuming.

Nightfall envelops us quickly in January and I find myself as drawn to the light as ever. That single red bokeh dot in the background was a taillight from a passing car. I caught it and held it in this frame, even as in reality it drifted off into the darkness.

I think each one of us is drawn to a different type of art, and that pull is reflected in how we create.

For me, the movies, images, and art I enjoy best are full of color, emotion and a bit of retrospection. They take me away from the harder edges of reality.

That’s why I color grade. If I were to list my top reasons for color-grading, the most important would be because it’s fun. It’s a joy to imagine what might be a more ideal version of the world around me.

I used to be a TV news reporter and videographer. We followed all the rules of traditional photography: white balance, composition, lighting and more. The pressure to deliver the news left little room for creativity. Maybe that’s why I’m so drawn to it now. What an incredible mode of expression, to be able to color grade an image.

Life is designed to be noticed. The hard parts are meant to be as visceral as the moments of beauty. What surrounds us and what we’re intended to see will be different for each of us. If we’re lucky, we might one day see something ordinary as rather incredible, or with a little more depth and color; something that perhaps we’d overlooked.

Important question. How have I missed out on Stranger Things all these years? I just finished season 2, so please, no spoilers! Every image so far in my Overlooked series was taken before I started watching. But, the vibes! It’s not just me, right? They match.

Is it because I’m a child of the 80s (born in the 70s) and this nostalgia has a hold on those of us in Gen X more powerful than we understand?

Or is it that this vibe has all generations in its grip? It’s compelling, nostalgic, a bit eerie but so emotionally beautiful. I’m loving the TV series. How amazing is it when a show is so well formed (color play, characters, lighting, storyline) it pulls all generations together in a sort of shared memory?

Walking past this scraggle of a tree I saw how it curved, almost like a protector, around that utility box.

It wasn’t until I got the image on my computer that I realized the right side of the curve is a fallen branch, from a different tree.

Even looking directly at something it can be all but impossible to see the invisible work behind the scenes. Maybe it didn’t take too much effort to hold up that broken branch. Maybe it’s too far-fetched to say the tree welcomed the branch as one of its own. Either way, it created something beautiful.

Sometimes I ask myself, why is this object or location or discarded item so pretty? Maybe it’s old, even dirty. But like a song, it calls out if you tune the station just right.

I saw the triad of yellow in this frame. The sign in front, the sign in back, and the yellow leaves. I waited a beat to see if any headlights drove past. Then this bus rumbled into the frame and my heart skipped—how deeply beautiful.
