Nothing can prepare you for what life decides to place in your path. However you choose to see it, life has a strange way of redirecting you when your soul needs it most. It’s fucking humbling. It’s not always gentle, but trauma has a way of stripping everything back until all that’s left is brutal honesty with yourself, your life, and what truly matters.

It’s been a quiet year.

Recovering from an accident, months in hospital, broken bones, brain injury, pain I didn’t know was possible, fear, confusion, losing parts of my identity, the inability to function, and questioning almost everything I thought I knew about myself. There were times I thought I would never think clearly again.

I’m still trying to understand things. What I do know is that I am deeply grateful. Gratitude has found me in places I never thought it could.

To every soul who carried me when I couldn’t carry myself… thank you. To those who held me, listened, opened your homes, helped navigate appointments, crossed oceans to care, countless hours on the phone, msged everyday in hospital, those who have kept trying to call or msg even when to this day I haven’t replied and loved me even when I wasn’t myself... your kindness will live in a pocket of my heart forever.

To every person whose compassion found me exactly when I needed it, thank you. You know who you are.

Be kind. You never know what someone is carrying behind the version of themselves they show the world.

Healing isn’t linear, and mine is still unfolding. I’m still discovering the lesson in all of this. But if this experience has taught me anything, it’s that life is precious. Brain injuries sound frightening…they are…but nothing is more powerful than the quiet, relentless strength of the human heart and its capacity to keep finding its way home.

I don’t know what’s next, but the chance to rebuild and rediscover is something I refuse to take for granted. The ability to travel again has been an absolute privilege. by @mellcoates
