Mellow Minds – Paul Schmidt

Somewhere at the foot of the German Alps, Paul spends his time shaping surfboards that are truly one of a kind. Legally named Paul Schmidt, he goes by HIES (heute ist es schön) which translates to „it’s a beautiful day.“

Taking beaten-up, retired windsurf boards, Paul strips them back, redefining what sustainable shaping looks like. There is a quiet magic in taking something forgotten, stripped of its former glory, and breathing a second life into it. The idea might be simple, but bringing it to life is anything but. The old boards are carefully stripped down, their cores given a new purpose and shaped by hand with an incredible eye for detail. Every little imperfection of the used blank is embraced and worked into the process.

And because we all know a beautiful board always surfs better, Paul presses intentionally curated dried flowers straight into the resin, turning each blank into a floating piece of art. This way, something that once brought someone joy gets a second life, ready to pass on that stoke to a new generation of surfers.

So naturally, we had to stop by his place. We spent a few quiet days at his wooden house, sitting by the stream running through his garden, drinking coffee, and talking story about craftsmanship, slow living, and giving old materials a second chance. Of course, we couldn’t leave without getting our hands dirty ourselves. Together, we embarked on a little project and shaped a Mellow Twin Fin Fish we had been dreaming up for a while.

To test the waters, we packed the fresh fish into the van and headed west to Brittany, chasing empty lineups, pristine coastline, and a secluded bay where the new board finally met the ocean. We gave it a proper taste of some of the finest waves the French coast has to offer.

Good company, good waves, good food, and a few days spent moving slow. Just a gentle reminder that beautiful things and meaningful moments take time.

There are two kinds of learning. One is technical. It’s the foundation, what can be taught, practiced, compared. The rules, the movements, the things that already exist. You measure progress, you get better, you build control.
The other kind starts once that foundation is there. We need technical skills to give us the tools to express ourselves. Style can’t be taught or measured.
