WHITE SHORTS. SATURDAY. OCTOBER. COME MAKE IT EVERYONE’S PROBLEM. ☀️🩳

Last Saturday, I believed the weather people and closed the store. Virtually all my small business colleagues were super busy. A lovely day to discover I’d put myself under house arrest for absolutely no reason.

Now they’re promising 80 degrees this Saturday. And apparently, I’ve learned nothing—because I’m believing them again.

The store will be OPEN. The shorts will be WHITE. They had better be right.

One day, our sons will be in a room without us. What will they stand for when we’re not there?

The sexual assault allegations in the Cornell 7 case should make every father, grandfather, uncle and mentor ask that question—and take responsibility for the example we’re setting.

Our boys hear how we talk about women. They notice whose cruelty we excuse, whose arrogance we admire and what we’re willing to laugh along with.

“Respect women” means very little if they watch us disrespect them.

We need to show them what strength looks like: accepting rejection without anger. Understanding that consent must be freely given. Challenging a friend who crosses a line. Getting help when someone is vulnerable. Saying, “This stops here,” even when the room turns against you.

And we need to choose leaders by those same standards. Who demonstrate honesty, empathy and accountability. Who make kindness something to practice rather than something to ridicule.

We can’t control every room our boys will enter. But we can give them an example worth carrying into it.

Have the conversation. Model the behavior. Teach them that belonging to the group is never more important than another person’s safety and dignity.

They’ll be in the room without us. Let’s help them become the men that room needs.

✅ Calls a day off “working from home.”
✅ Can hear a customer walk in from three rooms away.
✅ Has 47 tabs open, including one from 2023 that still feels important.
✅ Has multiple to-do lists at any given time.
✅ Checks sales while brushing their teeth.
✅ Sees a vacation and thinks, “That would make great content.”
