Some melodies are so timeless, they seem almost untouchable.
But I've always loved the idea of taking something familiar and exploring just how far it can go, without losing what made it beautiful in the first place.

All Flowers In Time Bend Towards The Sun - by Jeff Buckley and Elizabeth Fraser

I fell deeply in love this song when I first heard it years ago. When I found out that it was never meant to be heard, it was too late, I had played it 700 times and been changed by it.

I didn’t want to cover it at first, out of respect for Elizabeth Fraser and Jeff Buckley, given that it was never released.

Then a few days ago, I found out Jeff Buckley performed it on tour (bootleg recordings subsist from his performance at Selina’s in 1996), so I though it might be OK if I didn’t keep my mini cover to myself.

𝟓 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒈𝒔 𝑰 𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒓𝒏𝒆𝒅 𝒔𝒐𝒏𝒈𝒘𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒇𝒐𝒓 𝒂𝒏𝒐𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓 𝒂𝒓𝒕𝒊𝒔𝒕 ✨

I had the pleasure of songwriting for/with the wonderful @annazaatar on her debut single Come By — a retro pop tune masterfully produced by @emdeejabr . Go stream it (and follow her!), but beware: her voice is highly addictive.

Here’s what I learned:

𝟏. 𝐃𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐦𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐝𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐯𝐨𝐢𝐜𝐞
Consider the range, timbre, and vibe of the artist — and go wild. The melody Anna liked most was the one I genuinely wanted to hear in her gorgeous voice.

𝟐. 𝐑𝐞𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠
Immersing yourself in their musical inspirations saves so much time and confusion.

𝟑. 𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐫𝐞
I had always wanted to write catchy pop for another artist and kept putting it off. It ended up being one of the most creatively stimulating things I’ve done.

𝟒. 𝐆𝐞𝐭 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥
Sharing real-life stories helped us find the emotional truth of the song. We traded memories, mental images, and emotions the whole way through.

𝟓. 𝐃𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐭𝐨𝐨 𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐬
It is possible to keep compromising until something even more incredible sets in. When someone feels something isn’t right, it’s often worth scrapping, as much as you might want to defend it in the moment.
