On Thursday night we were at the Teatro di San Carlo in Naples for the premiere of «Mitridate, re di Ponto», which Mozart wrote at just fourteen and which, remarkably, had never before been staged in this house. Our Agustín Pennino sings Arbate, the king’s confidant, in Claus Guth’s production, which recasts the dynastic struggle of the libretto as a contemporary family drama.

After the morning in St. Gallen, yesterday evening took us to the Opernhaus Zürich for the first night of the revival of Puccini’s «La rondine», with our Vladimir Stoyanov returning as Rambaldo, the banker whose composed, unhurried authority frames Magda’s brief flight towards love. Vladimir was wonderful, and it was a joy to be there with him.

This morning we were at the Tonhalle St. Gallen for the general rehearsal of our Pietro Rizzo’s first symphonic concert as Chief Conductor of Konzert und Theater St. Gallen and Artistic Director of its concert division.

Pietro has known this orchestra since 2012, when he first came to St. Gallen as a guest conductor. Tonight, with Brahms’s Violin Concerto and Mussorgsky’s «Pictures at an Exhibition» in Ravel’s orchestration, that long acquaintance becomes a shared project, and we wanted to be in the hall as its first chapter began.

Last night we were at the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari for the opening of Nino Rota’s «Il cappello di paglia di Firenze», with our Marco Filippo Romano as Beaupertuis. For Marco it was a double debut: his first appearance in Cagliari and his first performance of the role, on an evening that also brought Rota’s opera to the city for the very first time!

Welcome Hannah von Wiehler as TOCCATA's new Artistic Director and Principal Conductor. Some of you were in the hall last March, when she conducted Verdi's Requiem with our orchestra and chorus. You felt what we felt. That night made this decision easy.

Born to American parents and raised in Moscow, she trained at Georgetown and holds a doctorate from Oxford, where she was a Rhodes Scholar. She has conducted at Carnegie Hall’s Zankel Hall, at the Opéra National de Bordeaux, and with the London Chamber Orchestra. She founded and led her own orchestra in Oxford for eight years, bringing music into hospitals, shelters, and places orchestras rarely go. And she and her family are making the Tahoe area their home.

"I want TOCCATA to be an archipelago, not an island," she says. "Connected to the schools, the museums, the studios, and the lakeside towns that make this region what it is. In a divided age, music remains one of the few things that can hold very different people in one room."

Her first season is called HUMAN. In an age of machines that write, speak, and compose, it asks the oldest question of all: what makes us human? Four concerts — BODY, ELEMENTS, MIND, and SOUL — alongside the traditions you love. Handel's Messiah in December. A Jazz Age night under the stars in July. And in August, for the first time ever, opera on the lake: Madama Butterfly at the water's edge, with the Humming Chorus sung from the shoreline at dusk.

A new era begins October 9, 10, and 11.
