Goodbye, dad ♥️

Goodbye to my irreverent, talented, charismatic, completely one-of-a-kind father - who could play any instrument masterfully, who could make anything out of wood and keep any kind of plant alive, whose imagination knew no bounds, who had excellent taste in music, who was a computer programming genius, a master carpenter, a prolific writer, and a lifelong storyteller.

Goodbye to my dad, eldest of four and defender from bullies, who met my mom at a sock hop and proposed to her at a frat party, who never stopped having fun or being a kid, who lived fast and loud, who was so audacious and witty that people were magnetized to him, who never asked permission or cared what anyone thought of him.

Goodbye to my dad, who took me camping and inspired me to love nature and animals, who threw me in the air, carried me on his shoulders, and lifted me off the ground with bicep curls, who taught me to never compromise who I am, who was my safe place for so long.

Goodbye to my dad, who loved his wife more deeply and with more devotion than I’ve ever seen anyone love anyone, and who wouldn’t eat for months after she died.

Goodbye to my dad, from whom I inherited my eyes, nose, terrible eyesight, an infinite curiosity, a capacity to feel, love, and grieve deeply, a disposition that’s both laidback and fiery, an appreciation for cold beer, a natural aptitude for so many things, and the strength to handle life.

Goodbye to my dad, who I’ve already missed for many years and will miss for many more to come.

We were just two 26-year-olds getting casually introduced at the bar once, after the Reptar record release show at Brooklyn Bazaar. Somehow between that February night in 2015 and today, there’s been so much life lived together.

There’s been more concerts than I could count, spontaneous walks, international trips, a pandemic pod, picnics in the park, bad dates recounted, mani-pedi appointments, apartment moves, ubers shared, cats acquired and lost, so many meals and beers and cocktails, a wedding we pulled off by the skin of our teeth, new years celebrations, and all the other holidays, dozens of bowling games, dance nights, a literally constant conversation about goals and self improvement, so many laughs, tears, and hugs, and all the various plots and episodes of our lives unfolding over the days, weeks, and years.

They say you’re a reflection of the five people you spend the most time with, and I’m so grateful Sarah has been my mirror for the past decade. As we moved from our 20s to our 30s together, she taught me to be a better person and remained up for anything always.

Somehow time turned this into something much more than casual - into one of the most meaningful relationships in my life. There’s nothing more important and nothing better than those old best friends who will last a lifetime.

Here’s to the end of an era and cheers to a new chapter, my little yogi is off to Georgia to raise a kid in a place where you don’t have to drag a stroller up slush-covered stairs. I’ll miss her and Hass like crazy, but - if you’ve read this far - I hope this serves as a reminder to pour into your friends for whatever time you have with them. ♥️ taken in Gutter Bar by @melpractice

Zora, May 2014 - Feb 2025

I still can’t believe it, my sweet girl is gone. Our lives and routines were completely intertwined, and I feel like part of my soul is missing.

Zora was, on a daily basis, the most beautiful cat I’d ever seen, and through the years she evolved into a sweet and supportive lap cat. She knew when I was sick or heartbroken, she made me laugh constantly, and she loved to play even into her older years.

She lived in eight homes and three major cities, was my companion through four boyfriends, four jobs, four bouts of covid, and kept me going each day through all the highs and lows of life.

She was sweet, smart, expressive, quirky, hilarious, curious, mischievous, and insanely good at hunting and catching balls. She loved to lay in sunbeams and windowsills, knead my stomach, watch birds, curl up in baskets, and sit purring in my lap while I drank my coffee every morning. Her warmth, beauty, and presence will be missed. She was three months shy of her 11th birthday.

To any cat parents: Zora was diagnosed with oral cancer on January 28 and her decline afterward was devastating. Oral squamous cell carcinoma is aggressive, incurable, painful, and merciless. The first signs I saw were diminished grooming and appetite - I brought her in for TWO vet visits and it was missed both times. Average age of onset is 11-12. Please insist on having your cat’s mouth checked if they show even slight changes in grooming or eating behavior. If it’s caught early enough, you can extend life by many months. For most cats and for Zora too, it’s too late, and they live less than a month after diagnosis. by @melpractice

last few months: Sarah + Hassan got married, started a new wfh job, several concerts, met Xiye Bastida, fall in nyc, finally became a morning person, painted paintings and gave them all away…then the country voted in the sexist racist fascist party so we sang karaoke til we went hoarse ✌🏼 #maskofzora by @melpractice
