This is SO Siena. 15 years old and decides on her own to run 28.16 miles in the Jimmy Fund Walk for Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. More than a marathon. And of course she does it. This girl is unstoppable. She works HARD and once she decides she’s doing something, it’s happening. Gorgeous, smart, athletic, independent, funny, cool as hell… but it’s her heart I love the most. Today, 9.4.26, I have 7 years sober. Seven years ago, I couldn’t stop drinking for seven minutes.

I grew up with loving, supportive parents and two sisters. I never wanted for anything, but somewhere along the way I became convinced I wasn’t enough. I wasn’t the best student or athlete. I needed tutors and extra help. I think the only award I ever got in school was Best Dressed.

There was no one thing that happened to me. I just had this God-sized hole in my heart and spent years trying to fill it with more. More attention. More validation. More of anything. More of everything. Eventually that became alcohol and other substances. One was too many, and a thousand was never enough.

I didn’t plan to become an alcoholic, destroy my family’s trust, lose relationships, total cars, lose the job and career I loved, then lose my home. But the thing that was most lost was me.

By the end, I drank around the clock because my hands shook so badly I couldn’t hold utensils or write without alcohol in my system. I was a shell of a person. I didn’t want to live, and I wasn’t afraid to die. And somehow I still thought, me? An alcoholic? No way.

Then came psych wards, detoxes, rehabs, sober living, food stamps, no car, AA, the 12 Steps, surrender, my sponsor of 7 years, and a Higher Power I call God. I stopped trying to run my own show and listened to people who knew how to stay sober. One day at a time, I came back.

Today my parents don’t have to wonder if I’m dead or alive. My family has their daughter, sister and aunt back. My friends have their friend back. People trust me again. They can count on me.

I have a job I love. I help other women. I have peace, gratitude and a life I worked hard to rebuild. Life still life’s the fuck out of me. I just don’t have to drink over it.

I’m sharing this for the person who thinks they’re too far gone, and for the family terrified someone they love is going to die. Please don’t give up hope.

Seven years ago, this life sounded impossible. My family got me back. And I got me back.

I thought my life was over. I was wrong.

You’ve always worked so hard and earned everything you have. PhD in biochemistry, straight A’s your whole life… everything you have, you earned.

And the mom you are? WOW. Siena is beautiful inside and out. She’s smart, driven, kind, athletic, and such an amazing niece to me. She’s a reflection of you and the values you’ve taught her. The way she loves and looks out for Sailor says everything about the mom you are.

You look amazing, healthy, strong, and glowing. I’m so happy to see you feeling so good after your new knee replacement and finally being out of pain.

I’m so proud of you and love you so much. Celebrate yourself today and every day because you deserve every bit of it.
