In 1999 we had no cell phones, no group chats, no Snapchat…. just driving around aimlessly looking for something to do. If you wanted to find your friends, you had to drive past the only two gas stations in town to see whose car was parked there. We bought pizzas and looked for movies to rent and ran into people… Just a bunch of teenagers trying to find the fun in a small town. I still can’t believe this happened. 🥹

A couple of months ago, I was contacted by WDAY News about the Memory Lane Project, and yesterday I was interviewed and the story aired.

What started with a box of old home movies has grown into something I never could have imagined. These videos have brought back so many memories for me, but the most incredible part has been seeing how deeply they connect with people all over the world.

Kevin did such an incredible job telling the story behind this project and capturing what it means to me. I’m so grateful for the opportunity to share it!

Thank you to everyone who has followed along, shared a memory, told me your story, or simply watched one of these old videos and felt something and maybe even recalled a piece of your past, too.

They call it the Millennial Ache. We are the last generation that remembers life before the internet, before social media, before life became so loud and fast. We had a foot in both worlds—the analog and the digital. There is something so bittersweet about seeing these grainy videos and remembering how simple life was back then. I’m making it my mission to bring these memories into the light before they’re gone for good. Thank you all for coming along for the ride! ❤️✨

It’s 1988 and we’re having a make believe birthday party for my Cabbage Patch doll in the Cook Car playhouse at my grandparents house. We served rocks and leaves for food, and my grandma played right along with us. 😂 I never would have remembered this day, but I’m so glad it was recorded. ❤️

Sometimes we forget that every old man was once a little boy.

With a childhood that ended decades before.

But sometimes, if you’re lucky, pieces of that time are still there in old home movies.

When I inherited my late grandpa’s films, I became determined to figure out who the people were and learn their stories. That led me to his last surviving brother, David. I went to him hoping he could fill in some of the missing pieces, but I didn’t expect how much the movies would mean to him, too.

I made him copies and helped set them up on his computer in his assisted living apartment. A few days later, he called me laughing and said he couldn’t stop watching them. He even sent me a family history book my grandpa had made to help me piece together more of the stories. It was fascinating.

Then I got a text that David had passed away.

I had no idea we were in the last weeks of his life. I’m so thankful these old films connected us when they did and gave him the chance to revisit his childhood one more time. ❤️ by @memory.lane.project

I love finding the completely ordinary moments buried in old home movies. These little glimpses of everyday life in the late ’90s Midwest are such a time capsule. Family, friends, school, sports, the family computer room and everything in between. And somehow I remember exactly what all of this felt like. ❤️ What was your favorite year in the ‘90s?

27 years ago this month, we moved into our first dorm at Moorhead State University. I had no idea this little piece of our lives had been recorded until I found it this year. Our moms helping us move in, Prince and Britney Spears playing on the radio in the background… it is so perfectly 1999. 😂
