Over the weekend, I got together with some friends. We talked about a lot of things, including how menopause, aging, illness, and life’s unexpected changes have affected the way we see ourselves and our bodies. Our bodies carry us through so much. They have endured heartbreak, stress, loss, healing, childbirth, surgeries, cancer, menopause, and countless ordinary days that required more strength than anyone else could see. Yet when we look in the mirror, too many of us only see the scars left behind. In this article I shared the one quote that made me made me stop and think about my body differently. I realized I need to start seeing my body as the hero that it actually is. Not as something to criticize. Not as a collection of flaws. And rather than always finding something wrong with it, maybe it’s time to celebrate it. ❤️ You can read the full story at the link in the bio if you’re interested . Menopause may be natural—but that doesn’t make it easy. And when it’s brought on by cancer, surgery, or illness, it can feel like everything hits you all at once. 😣 I know, because I found my way to menopause through chemotherapy treatments. Menopause Brain is my place to unpack the chaos: my own experiences, the stories of other women and the ones we don’t always tell, along with the latest buzz on treatments, lifestyle, and research. With a background in advocacy and journalism, I don’t shy away from the uncomfortable conversations. If we’re going through it, we deserve to talk about it. However you found your way to perimenopause, menopause, or beyond, you’re welcome here. 💛 ✨ I want to hear your story. If you’d like to share your experience—or be featured for your expertise—send me a DM. New Menopause Brain columns drop every Monday morning. #menopause #chemosideeffects by @menopausebrain
It’s not always an easy subject to talk about but there are some things I wish I know about menopause and my vagina before I got here. I think vagina care should be a part of self-care and healthcare because as it stands now, we don’t think about vagina health unless we have a baby or when something stops working. And in menopause, as a result of declining hormones, sometimes things stop working. In this weeks column, I share a conversation I had with an 80 year old suddenly dealing with itching and burning, and a few other things. Did you know that some women continue to experience menopausal symptoms for years—or forever. No one likes to say it but it’s true. The good news is that there are treatments. If only we had a magic pill for this stuff. You can read the whole column by clinking the link in my bio. #perimenopause #menopause #womens health by @menopausebrain
Menopause is tricky. It’s even trickier when you’ve been forced into it. I think preparing for it by eating well and exercise before you find yourself in the hot seat 🔥 can make a big difference in your health in menopause. So many of you here know menopause can happen at any age due to illness or surgery or chemotherapy. However, you got here, it’s never easy, but it’s a lot harder if you’ve been forced into menopause. I have a newsletter now. If you’re interested you can follow the link in my bio. Every Monday I post menopause brain. 🧠 by @menopausebrain
Here are 3 things I’m learning to let go of in menopause: 💛 The version of myself that had endless energy; For years, I pushed through everything; less sleep, more stress, more responsibility. Cancer and forced menopause showed me that your body will stop negotiating with you —so you better take care of it. 💛 The idea that my worth is tied to how I look; this one is hard to confess to but looks do matter, whether we like it or not—and hormonal changes, change how you look and feel— from dry skin and hair thinning to vision problems 🤓 hormone loss can change everything. 💛The need to keep everyone comfortable; now, I choose me. I want everyone to feel comfortable but not at my expense or that of my health so I’m choosing me and my health more. Can you relate to any of this? #menopause perimenopause chemotherapy by @menopausebrain
Time out is important especially when hormones are changing. It’s hard for women to unplug. We actually have to make an effort to do it. When I do, I feel better. I love being outdoors, especially on beautiful days. I love looking at magazines and anything that makes me laugh. how do you unplug? menopause, perimenopause, chemopause, chemotherapy, aging well, by @menopausebrain

We make the most bone we’re ever going to make ages 0-18. But in menopause, women lose bone. It’s been reported that women lose somewhere between 25 and 30 percent of their bone mass in menopause years 😕 I’m one of those women. I had no idea I was at risk of losing bone. I can't think of one doctor who spoke to my parents about bone health, and as an adult, not one doctor spoke to me about it. As parents, you spend years planning for your child's future. Today, I’m asking you to think about your child's ‘bone bank.’ Food allergies, food intolerances, being petite, and being female—these are the things that make a person high-risk for osteoporosis. While DNA plays a role in bone health, diet, supplements, and exercise can help your child build enough bone mass to prepare her for menopause. Don’t wait for your doctor to initiate the conversation. Advocate for your daughter's future self, now. Menopause, #parenting #osteoporosis by @menopausebrain
OK, so the last photo in this carousel makes you think that the rest of your life is going to be miserable. That’s just my sense of humor because most days that’s how I feel right now. But every woman experiences menopause in her own way. However you get to menopause, knowledge is power, especially when it comes to health and well-being. Understanding that there are four stages of menopause can help us better communicate with physicians and practitioners, navigate our symptoms, and find the right treatments. Information matters. Knowing is power to help us navigate, smarter. I’m curious…where are you on your menopause journey? Is there something you wish someone had told you before you got here? by @menopausebrain
