„Narnia – It’s all in the wardrobe just like it told you!“

We are still overwhelmed that we won the 1st prize for the Freimundo competition of @kooperative_grossstadt together with our dearest @wurzelsieben 🌹
Thanks to @ottl.la for the landscape, @merz_kley_partner for the structural engineering and jinjan consulting for the energy design!

At the heart of every home is a wardrobe to Narnia. Anyone who has had enough of living together leaves the collective world through the wardrobe. Behind it, your own world begins: untidy children’s rooms, dreams by day and night, peace and quiet or your own music. The wardrobe makes flats small and large, connects them with the switchable rooms and allows the entire house to breathe. It is also a place to „be in between“: in the bathroom, in the home office and stays the wardrobe at the same time. Because „it’s all in the wardrobe, just like I told you... by @menu_surprise

As architecture can get pretty complicated sometimes, we started the year by procrastinating with some good old-fashioned gum chewing, together with @paulineprinz .
No requirements, silly ideas, and countless free glass panels on Kleinanzeigen eventually turned into a little project: inspired by our favorite chewing gum from the early 2000s… (which we may have stuck under school desks ourselves).

Want to stick one yourself? Just drop us a message and we’ll send you the 3D files and the manufacturer of the suction cups.
No guarantees though – as you know, even the best chewing gum eventually gives up :)

We do not claim copyright, which is in fact held by Nickelodeon, SpongeBob SquarePants (ep. “The Gift of Gum”) and Hubba Bubba (Wrigley / Mars, Incorporated). by @menu_surprise

Earlier this year, we lost an open competition for the House of Democracy in Frankfurt, in which we dealt with the question of to what extent the architectural appearance of the Paulskirche, in which the first National Assembly in Germany took place in 1848, is still contemporary for a constantly changing and diverse society.

Physical and psychological barriers were to be carefully dismantled and transferred onto Paulsplatz in the form of fragments. This is how “Babelfishes” arise—translators that are meant to motivate people to participate and appropriate.

Together with @studiovulkanlandscape , we immersed ourselves in Douglas Adams’ story The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. The film clip is taken from the first episode of the original BBC TV series from 1981.

All building components and materials at our brotherly brick project are assembled additively, layer upon layer, culminating in the lilac tiles in the new bathroom, sourced from the secondhand market—a subtle nod to the ceramic industry of the former GDR, with its iconic clouded „Boizenburg“ tiles. 👾 taken in Boizenberg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany by @menu_surprise

Over the past centuries, the existing Prussian masonry structure in the Uckermark has continually been expanded with an additional spatial layer. Each era introduced its own brick type and bond. Repairs and restorations were carried out using whatever bricks were available.

We approach the colorful conglomerate of existing stones with our own contemporary brick. Additively, we introduce our new layer of modern perforated bricks, measuring 17.5 x 37.3 x 24.9 cm. In contrast to the historical approach of spatial expansion, our renovation focuses on densifying the interior spaces.

In our conversion project in Krewitz, the existing conglomerate of brickwork is additively densified with a new layer of contemporary industrial perforated bricks. In doing so, we align ourselves with the existing structure in a brotherly manner 👭

In line with the limited budget, a pragmatic approach is taken by consistently using the same brick format: for the walls, the fireplace, the kitchen, and the staircase—even if this results in an unconventional riser ratio. Fortunately, the clients are tall…

Like strange giants, the new shafts hold the reins of a new story in their hands, keeping 300 years of history together. Again and again, they pop up surprisingly in different places — sometimes large, sometimes small, sometimes truncated, sometimes as an object in space. Inspired by the beautiful existing stove ceramics, the shafts contain the wiring for the new electrical systems, plumbing, and heating in our project „Conversion of a Converted House“.
