Civics isn't a one-time topic. 🗽

We set aside today for our biennial Civics Conference, but civic engagement is something we continue to explore year-round.

The Ammerman Lecture and our keynote this morning featured "New York Times" bestselling author and "The Atlantic" staff writer Clint Smith, who encouraged students to use historical understanding as a tool to navigate the present and build a better future.

Students also participated in breakout sessions with alumni, parents, and other community experts to examine how personal liberty and the common good intersect across history, law, and daily life. The day concluded with deliberation sessions centered on a few of today's big issues.

Our conference takes place ahead of Election Day on November 3, when we encourage all members of our community to vote.

Do you believe in ghosts?! 👻

We've heard stories about the haunted spaces at Mercersburg Academy. During the day, campus is bright, cheerful, and full of life. But when the sun goes down, something changes... From ghostly apparitions to eerie sounds, there are plenty of tales about what lurks in the shadows of our school.

Curious about some of Mercersburg's ghost stories? Look back and listen to firsthand accounts shared in a special Halloween podcast from 2020 on our SoundCloud.

Allison Stephens and Jim Malone combine for an incredible 86 years of service to Mercersburg Academy. 🤯

Today, they gave a Chapel Talk about mental health. They shared their personal experiences with depression and anxiety and the steps they've taken to navigate those challenges. They emphasized the importance of finding support and not trying to shoulder everything on your own. You are not alone.

Sometimes, it's nice to know that even our heroes are human.

While we obviously couldn't interview the real Jimmy Stewart, we had the opportunity ask "Jimmy" star KJ Apa a few questions.

Apa studied everything about the heroic actor—including his voice, cadence, and mannerisms—from watching his movies over and over prior to portraying him in the film.

Today marks a historic moment for our school. 🪏

Mercersburg Academy officially broke ground on a new science building that will serve the school for years to come. The Judy and Allen Zern '61 Hall for Science and Innovation, commonly referred to as Zern Hall, will feature flexible environments adaptable for future technological shifts including dedicated spaces for research science, environmental science, and advanced computer science, alongside hands-on fabrication areas including a wood shop, metal shop, 3D printing lab, and robotics studio. The facility will also house classrooms tailored for a new academic concentration in engineering, as well as a multi-use lecture room for campus events.

We're excited to get construction underway with an anticipated completion date in 2029.

If you're planning to see "JIMMY," just know that we saw it first (and highly recommend it)!

Head of School Quentin McDowell and Board President G. Ames Prentiss '89 hit the red carpet for the pre-screening of "JIMMY" at the Heartland International Film Festival. They were also joined by Jimmy Stewart's nephew Jason Perry '74.
