100 days sober today.

I’ve gone back and forth on what I wanted to say about this because there’s no way to make the last 100 days sound neat or perfect.

The truth is, getting sober was lonely.

When I completely walked away from the life I was living and the circle I was surrounded by, I realized pretty quickly how many of my friendships were really just party friendships. When the drinking and everything that came with it disappeared, so did a lot of people.

And for the first time, I had to sit with the realization that I actually didn’t have that many real friends.

That was hard.

For a long time, alcohol was tied to almost every part of my social life. I convinced myself I couldn’t socialize without it. Then I convinced myself I couldn’t network without it. That I couldn’t close deals without having a drink. That somehow alcohol made me more confident, more outgoing, more likeable and better at business. I had to relearn all of that sober.

How to walk into a room as myself.
How to have conversations without needing something to take the edge off.
How to build relationships without a party attached to them.
How to trust that who I am is enough.

Luckily, I had an amazing girlfriend beside me who saw something in me that, at the time, I couldn’t even see in myself.

She saw a guy with potential.

She pushed me to reconnect with the things that actually made me happy. Designing. Creating. Working. Building something I’m proud of. She stood beside me while I figured out how to enjoy life again without needing alcohol to make it fun.

And somewhere along the way, things started changing.

I became reliable again. I started putting the people who mattered most first.

I lost 30 pounds.

I became more present with my friends and family.

I started following through on the things I said I was going to do.

My work got better. My relationships got better. My confidence started coming back. I started enjoying designing again. I started recognizing the person looking back at me.

There are still lonely days. There are still uncomfortable moments. And there are still parts of myself I’m learning about. Life is alot brighter on this side of the tracks. Cheers ! by @merchguydev
