I honestly don't even know how to start this post. Where have I been? On July 14th, I went to @cedarssinai ER with what turned out to be a ruptured appendix and subsequent sepsis. For those that don't know (I didn't really), it's a potentially life-threatening response to infection. I ended up on life support with 9+ machines, induced semi-coma, intubated, and so much more. A close group of friends and family watched me around the clock, advocated for me, fought for me, watched over and spoke for me when I literally couldn't speak for myself. Some of you were part of the What's App group that received the updates. Many others of you donated to take care of the people taking care of me, sent me cards and presents and text messages and flowers, THANK YOU. To be honest, I don't even know all of it because I was unconscious for the worst parts of it. It's been a slow road to recovery, but I'm on it. I went to California Rehab Institute for 20 days after spending 2 months at Cedars, and that was a critical part of my recovery as I relearned things that I took for granted. I entered this @newbeauty contest on a whim as Max, my gubby @twistedname drove me home to take care of me and help me recover even more. I'm now back in WeHo, closer to my numerous doctor appointments and with my sister from another mister @mylenamyrealtor. My bestie @livelovetarot continues to be the rock taking me to my appointments. Thanks to my friends, especially @keithkaplanproperties this little whim of entering this contest has a chance. It's important to me, because as some of you may know I once owned a beauty brand and it's been a big part of what I believe - beauty for all, all ages and sizes, and ..... abilities. Some of the best food can be found in a strip mall. @ristorante.vivi in Valley Village is one of those. Two years in, quietly doing its thing — Eater LA reviewed them early so we knew it had to be good. Traditional Italian. Pizza, pasta, all of it made in-house, all of it available all day. Chef Angel is not playing around and with an addiction to cooking shows, you know I asked to step into the kitchen and watch him cook. This is the spot you bring your bestie on a Sunday night when you have to carb load for a crazy week ahead. Cozy. Unpretentious. Warm and Sunday Supper vibes. No wait list, although Chef told me that Saturday nights can get really busy. And when I found out that some of the folks from WeHo fave @dialogcafe like to pop in there for a bite - well that sealed the deal for me. Our waiter Justin was the kind of server who makes you forget you’re at a restaurant. He made us feel so welcome and had great recs for us 👇 🥗 Caesar & Artichoke Hearts — bright, crisp, perfect start. Homemade croutons crumbled into every savory bite. 🍝 Pappardelle Bolognese — deeply umami, those wide ribbons holding on for dear life. Yes. 🫕 Oxtail Cavatelli — the one. Tender in a way that takes time and intention. You’ll think about it later. 🍗 Chicken Marsala — classic done right, which is harder than it sounds. And fire. So much fire. 🍋 Lemon Mascarpone Cheesecake — velvety, bright, exactly the ending the meal deserved - it was served alongside Justin's coffee. Wine. Good food and a warm welcome. Today's matcha moment brought to you by @cafe_matcha by @alfred Fun fact: I moved to Tokyo right after college - that's where I fell in love with matcha. The verdant powder, the ritual of the whisk… bye bye teabags. Sunday’s mission was to try the limited-run Dark batch at Cafe Matcha. 🍵 Verdict: Saikō ni oishī. So so good.
