Mother’s Day hits different when your radiant 68-year-old mother has Alzheimer’s. While the disease changes her brain, it doesn’t change her essence. She may forget things but never how to love.

Her beauty, joy, and kindness remain untouched—her effervescent presence, unwavering compassion, and unconditional love illuminates every moment.

I am endlessly proud of the incredible woman and mother she is—who built our family with much strength and grace. And I am equally grateful for my father, whose steadfast love and care for her are inspiring, abundant, and profound.

Her spirit shines brighter than ever, and I am honored to walk this journey with her.

Five years ago, we reimagined how art could safely connect our community during the pandemic. Today, #IGNITEBroward has become a vibrant, free festival of light and art, uniting people of all ages and cultures.

Gratefully Glamping ⛺️ in the Texas Hill Country for Thanksgiving!

With the house filled with family, @davidemcd and I decided to build a yurt! We decked it out with sofas, a bed, projector, music, 🪩 lights, garment rack and even a hot tub — it was the yurt of our dreams and Club Mere did not disappoint for the after parties 😜 we’re still reeling with gratitude and memories made with our family and my sweet, happy Mom ☺️🥹🥰 taken in Fredericksburg, Texas by @mereclements

RIPP II 💔

Looking at pictures of her was just too hard and so it has taken me two months to gain enough strength to share this.

However, the crater in my heart has slowly been soothed by moments of grace and gratitude.

Some of these moments, pictured above, included a ceremony we held in her honor at the family ranch house in Texas — a place where Paquita used to run wild and free (sometimes too much, like when she would get lost in snake holes from chasing armadillos and deer 😝). And so at Thanksgiving, my family and I scattered her ashes upon a hilltop where our family dog, Earl, is buried. We adapted poems from “Dog Songs” by Mary Oliver and regaled in memories of her fearless soul and tender heart. My parents’ new dog, Buddy, has kept an eye on her 🦄 where her ashes remain.

There is no doubt that I wouldn’t have survived this without the many friends and family who have gathered around me. Thank you all for your inextinguible love and light. ✨🫶 taken in Fredericksburg, Texas by @mereclements

It is with the heaviest of hearts that I share my angel Paquita unexpectedly died from heart failure on November 11, 2022. 💔

Likely a Chihuahua mixed with Toy Fox Terrier, Paquita was nine pounds and probably 10 years old. I’d envisioned having Paquita for many more years, as fellow chihuahua owners frequently validated my research that small dogs can live for 18 years.

Paquita had many friends and even several moms, particularly Sophia, who rescued her off the streets of Miami and ultimately gave me the greatest gift I’ve ever known. 🙏🏽

Together, we grew grey, traveled often, and explored many precarious situations. 🦌🌵

She taught me what it is to truly love someone, how to care for another and how important love is for survival.

In the words of her sitter, Yolyann, ‘Paquita had the best life. She was the happiest dog, who lived life to the fullest and wasn’t afraid of anything.’

One thing that brings me solace in this tremendous loss is the gratitude I have for our tender years together. In myriad ways she saved me; and together we survived and thrived during the most challenging years of my life to date.

She was so loved and so valued and even at nine pounds she reined supreme in her own right.

What started as a dream...is now IRL! Our @browardarts team has been working nonstop throughout the pandemic to ensure the arts and culture sector survives and as we mark nearly one year of hardship we worked with @yeswearemad to safely bring the community together through art with “Light the Night!” A week of video art projections on three buildings in downtown Fort Lauderdale. Two final chances to catch it from 7-11pm tonight and tomorrow! It took a village, but fortunately we have a creative and dedicated one.
