The other day in my backyard we launched The Beautiful Brain Campaign — an initiative to make sure women’s brain health is funded by the NIH and funneled to the best neuroscientists there are. Because I believe then dementia can be cured. Brain health was not in my plan. Dementia. FTD. Alzheimer’s. Death. Funerals. 3 eulogies in 24 months. Cremation. Organ donation. Never ending Grief. Also not in my plan. I dreamed about my parents becoming grandparents — the things we’d do together, the rituals we’d create. I dreamed about becoming an adult with my parents beside me. Those dreams still exist. But at 43, they’re fantasies now. I’ve made peace with that — the loss, the pain, the confusion, the paralysis, the emotional mayhem. And the rebirth of who I am without the people I came from. So I’m on a mission: my kids will not fantasize about me with their kids. They will get me — and my beautiful, healthy brain. To every woman who has held me up, cheered me on, cried with me, grieved with me, inspired me (& Eric, George, & The Steiner Boys) — you have my whole heart. Join me. Let’s all be back in this backyard for our 100th birthdays. I’ll throw the party. My mom left this earth when I was on the plane to see her — peaceful in the care of my baby brothers and dad. Three of the most sensitive, loving, and loyal men in this world. (In part because they are of my beautiful mother). On the plane I told my husband my body felt like It was shutting down and I needed to close my eyes. Eric woke me up to say we would miss her so to text my brothers what I wanted to say. I think my body knew it was happening before my brain. I got to say goodbye and kiss her perfect face and brain despite disease. My husband and I stayed up most of the night last night. He ordered me pickles and chips off Go Puff. Stone cold sober We ate them in bed until 2AM and laughed that it may be the first time I’ve ever eaten chips on covers — my mom would have never allowed it. Ellen Steiner was the perfect woman & an extraordinary mother. I was so lucky to be hers. I can’t wait to find her in all the new forms I know she will take. 🕊️🤍. by @merelee513

Got this house when she was in my belly and he wasn’t even 2, the little bay beach and the sunset made us say yes In a hurry trying to find a safe place on the pandemic — we’ve moved across the country and back to try and find a place that made more sense. Worrying our decision was a function of fear not intention — We failed. Inconvenient in ways, perfectly far from a city in others, small, wild, and beautiful. This is home. The perfect choice for us. Optimism came up over and over this weekend during a UNGA event I hosted from home and it changed how I think about it. Sebastian Guth from @bayerofficial opened with something I keep coming back to, that in global health specifically, optimism is not naive, it is necessary if we actually want to tackle what is ahead. @richardwedelman pushed it further, naming trust, or the lack of it, as the real fault line right now, and reframing that gap as our biggest opportunity to act together as one humanity instead of fractured pieces. I added my own piece to that. Optimism cannot just be a feeling we reach for when things get hard. It has to be a strategy. A resilient, solutions-oriented mindset is what actually drives systemic change, not just what makes us feel better while waiting for it.
