No matter how much @dadam10913 doesn’t want to be celebrated, I am not taking any of his birthdays for granted. So HAPPY BIRTHDAY, Adam!!! 🎉🎉🎉

He serves our family excellently and tirelessly. He’s a loyal friend and adoring Dude to two granddaughters. He’s a protective and providing father and step-father. He’s a husband beyond all my expectations.

The Lord alone understands His ways, but I’m learning to appreciate the goodness He has given in every season.

If the Lord wills, here’s to many, many more happy birthdays together, Adam. I love you so much. 🎈 by @merelemm

Q: What is our only hope in life and in death?

A: That we are not our own, but belong, body and soul, both in life and in death, to God and to our Savior Jesus Christ.

This catechism that we learned as a family, the one that was your phone screensaver when you died, has been swirling around in my mind as your birthday has approached.

...in life.

...and in death.

Our only hope.

We’re separated for a time, but still united in our singular hope. Wow.

As we remember and celebrate you today, I keep thinking about how much you loved life. You loved people well, laughed hard, and made life an adventure. And also, I remember the confidence you had in Christ. Over the years, I watched your faith grow deeper and your hope become more certain.

This year has held a lot of change. (Can you believe we call East Texas home again?) Lots of days I’ve felt more than a little unsteady. But when I think about the way you lived, I’m encouraged to keep going- to fight for joy, to embrace life, and to be open to whatever goodness God has ahead.

We miss you so much. We’re grateful you were ours for a time.

Until we meet again, eyes on Jesus.

🎈Happy 48th birthday, Aaron.

Romans 14:7–8 ~ For none of us lives to himself, and none of us dies to himself. For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s. by @merelemm

Happiest anniversary to us, Adam! ❤️

This year held more than we expected. More than we planned. But we made it through, and when all the mixed-up feelings settle out, gratitude rises to the top.

I’m grateful —

• to our kids, who are enduring their own seasons as we navigate a road they didn’t choose. They keep showing up at home (mostly for food?) and they let me hug them. Those are my favorite days.

• to you, for being the safest and strongest place for me to grow into our new life. You are unbelievably thoughtful in your care and steady in your love. Plus you are patient, always pick out the best food, and never forget anything.

• to the Lord, who mercifully wove our stories together. This was His plan, not ours, which means we can trust He will see us through. More than just surviving, He’s been gracious to bring joy to many of our days.

I love you, babe! Cheers to us and to every day we get together.

Till we die. 🥂 by @merelemm

Hallelujah, by and by.

It’s been five years since Aaron flew away—
…to God’s celestial shore
…like a bird released from these prison walls,
…no more cold iron shackles,
…where joys will never end.

Oh, glory.

For five years, Aaron has been face to face with Jesus, seeing fully the glory of God, knowing fully the goodness we only imagine. He sings hallelujah without restraint!

For five years, I’ve been begging for a glimpse into Heaven, into Aaron’s current joy. Let me see, please. When we sing of Heaven at church, there are always tears. Tears for the joy Aaron knows and for the ache in my own heart. Every hallelujah is surrendered as a petition to God’s faithfulness and in hope for that bright morning.

For five years, God has remained overwhelmingly good. Are there days I even forget about Aaron’s absence? Never. But the same broken hallelujah that we offer God for Aaron’s life, we offer Him for the lives He has provided us now. It won’t be too much longer until we’re all singing together again.

Hallelujah, by and by.

One day closer. by @merelemm

Happy Birthday to my very best friend! 🎉 Adam, you are such a gift in my life. Thank you for being amazing every single day—and for letting me snap your picture at any given moment. 😉

This year has been full (how does every year somehow top the last?), and through it all you’ve shown up with even more love, strength, and patience for all of us. I’m asking the Lord to return to you many times over the joy you’ve brought into my life.

I love you so much! ❤️ by @merelemm

We blinked!

Summer is gone.☀️
Three kids head to college this month. 👋🏼
Just these two are left at home.🏡 (10th and 9th grades)

It’s a wild life we’re living and I’m so grateful for it. 💕

Also, I did not get permission to post these photos, so you don’t have to tell them you saw them here. Okay?😉 by @merelemm

For four years, my kids and I have called Vanderbilt Drive home. We have lived lots of good days and lots of hard days here.

With four of our six headed to college and beyond, @dadam10913 and I will make our home together with the youngest (and tallest) two boys back in East Texas.

Swipe to see the house now and a few ‘before’ pics of when we bought it. I think we, like the house itself, have each been transformed over these years.

No doubt, we’re all still becoming. Right here, right now is pretty good too though.

Four years ✨

We miss you every day, Aaron.

We miss our #1 fan. Are you on the front row of our great cloud of witnesses or leading the charge at the front of our rollercoaster?

I cannot wait for the day we get to catch up on all the things happening here. Can you believe we have a beautiful granddaughter? Do you like the name I chose for you, A-A? Isn’t it wild that Olivia is launched…all the way to a beach town in South Carolina, her dream?!

And the rest of the crew? William, Violet, Isaac what incredible humans! Can you see that each of them are carrying pieces of your spirit in the most unique ways?

What about the big family we have now? Wild and also wonderful, isn’t it?

I imagine you and Emily often sit together in the stands cheering us on. Surely you’re marveling at God’s goodness in our lives.

Keep cheering for us, Aaron: We’re finding our way slowly. Always trusting that His good plans are rooted in His deep love for us.

And keep enjoying Heaven! We will see you there soon. Until then, know we love you and we miss you! by @merelemm

See you again soon, Avia.

Aaron’s mom, my “other mother,” met Jesus in the early hours of Friday morning, while sleeping peacefully. Imprisoned in a body afflicted with Parkinson’s disease and progressive dementia, she’s now free and undoubtedly experiencing a sweet reunion with Aaron.

Knowing Paula was to experience exceptional kindness, natural elegance, and unconditional love. She carried grace to all, finding the best in each person’s character. She was always ready to serve a cup of tea and ponder life’s deep questions in meaningful conversation.

She spoke courage into our early adult decisions by confidently claiming, “you will make a good decision.”

She emphasized the significance of each celebration by carefully and extravagantly wrapping every single gift, regardless of value.

She would gently holler, “Hello the house!” when she stepped unannounced into our back hallway to collect hugs from the kids whenever she drove by our Clinton Ave house.

She soothed worries and frustrations with a gentle empathy and a soft, calming, “Oh, this is so hard, isn’t it?”

She (and Ken) beamed with pride as they cheered and applauded at nearly every event the kids had for the years we shared Athens as a hometown.

…Being loved by her is a gift I will cherish for the rest of my life. Until we see you again. ❤️ by @merelemm
