Sun is an exhibition by Nicolas Kubail Kalousdian featuring an autonomous robotic sculpture: a sphere sheathed in interlocking, hand-carved wooden fragments. The largest panels are engraved with a Mesopotamian eclipse ritual, anchoring the piece in ancient cosmology.

Alternating between hums and howls, Sun moves in rhythm with an internal prayer. As it navigates the space with self-correcting motion, it pauses, turns, and responds to obstacles and onlookers, weaving together machine logic and ceremonial rhythm.

Drawing from Neolithic stone balls, Mesopotamian mouth-opening rites, Ice Age flutes, and the myth of walking monoliths, Sun is a fragment of world memory: a composite of glimpses unearthed across history.

Nicolas Kubail Kalousdian (b. 1993, São Paulo, Brazil) holds a MSc from the University of Stuttgart, Germany, and a BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA).

Thank you to everyone who came to the opening. The gallery is open weekends 12-5 or by appointment.

Ecce puella
Sam Cooke
March 1 - 30 2025

Thanks to everyone who came out for the opening! The show will be open weekends 12-5 and by appointment through March 30. Dm or email contact@merygates.net for inquiries.

#merygates #samcooke At the heart of Ecce Puella stands an eight-foot tall androgynous figure, sculpted from dyed
plastic clay. It looms like a relic of some forgotten mythology, both fearsome and absurd,
predator and child. A smaller, cruder form—a bunny, caught mid-frolic—lurks behind, its
presence nagging like a half-remembered dream. The walls frame a series of six works, their
lattice-like compositions evoking windows, portals, or cages. In the brick chimney remains that
punctuate the gallery's white walls: a voluptuous figure nailed to a cross, a crustacean wedged
between her lips.
Cooke’s material is singular—plastic clay, dyed, pressed, and hardened into forms that ooze
both synthetic sheen and bodily decay. Glossy imprints of Dora the Explorer’s face leer from the
surfaces, nestled among warped, baroque baby heads. The tension between innocence and
monstrosity, between object and organism, pulses throughout the exhibition. There’s a kind of
sickly ornamentation at play, a cathedral aesthetic corrupted, turned pliant, melting in real time. by @mery_gates
