Det Hjemsþkte Hjertet” is the crowing finale to the epic Laurentian Trilogy!

When discussing the North American black metal landscape, one name stands out: PANOPTICON. Founded in 2007 in Kentucky by sole mastermind and multi-instrumentalist Austin Lunn, the project has evolved over nearly two decades into one of the most distinctive and influential forces in US Black Metal. While the Scandinavian second wave historically focused on misanthropy and anti-theism, Lunn shattered genre boundaries by fusing blistering atmospheric black metal with deeply rooted American folk, bluegrass, working-class narratives, and a profound reverence for the natural world.

“Det Hjemsþkte Hjertet” was my Album of the Month back in May – and without a doubt, a top contender for overall Album of the Year! “The Haunted Heart” (Englisch meaning of the album title) holds a truly unique place in the project's extensive discography. Musically, it sets itself apart from its predecessors in fascinating ways. Where past releases often maintained a clear division between aggressive black metal outbursts and acoustic bluegrass passages, this record merges those contrasts into a majestic, almost orchestral opulence. Dense arrangements of cello and violin are no longer just acoustic interludes; they weave directly through the icy tremolo picking and relentless blastbeats. At the same time, the black metal core carries a raw, physically cutting texture, beautifully complemented by classic rock-inspired guitar solos and haunting vocals.

Lyrically, the album delivers immense emotional depth. Drawing from Austin Lunn’s personal isolation in the Minnesota wilderness, it reflects on a lifetime of memories, aging, and solitude. The themes center on the relentless passage of time, grief, internal ghosts and the painful acceptance of mortality. With this masterpiece, Lunn crafts the crowning finale to the incredible Laurentian Trilogy following ...And Again Into the Light and The Rime of Memory. A monumental piece of art and a defining moment in an already excellent discography.

MY FAVORITE RELEASES: AUGUST 28th – SEPTEMBER 11th

Late August and early September brought an absolute avalanche of top-tier heavy music! Here are the records that haven't left my rotation:

@sighofficial – Goh-Ka
Avant-garde black metal grandmasters Sigh prove their excellence once again blending chaotic black metal, their trademark quirkiness and traditional Japanese folk instrumentation into yet another wildly intoxicating journey.

@chatpileband – Who Loves The Sun
Brutal, bleak, and unhinged noise-sludge that dives even deeper into abrasive alt-metal dynamics and even some nu metal influences without losing an ounce of its raw, crushing power.

@dreadnoughtdenver – Wars of Spirits // Wards of Light
Ethereal, almost otherworldly, atmospheric progressive metal that effortlessly weaves gorgeous folk-infused passages and futuristic synths  with soaring, blackened climaxes. A fascinating listen!

@fluisteraars.official – Jacht der Mysteriën
Hypnotic atmospheric black metal filled with sprawling, emotive guitar tapestries and transcendent energy. A very addictive album for me.

@sworn.official – Null Crowned the Infinite
Razor-sharp melodic black metal delivering soaring tremolo melodies, devastating blast beats and an overall majestic feeling to it.

@russiancircles – Nine
Instrumental post-metal titans doing what they do best – punishingly heavy, highly atmospheric and meticulously crafted wall-of-sound soundscapes.

@greenlungband – Necropolitan
Occult Sabbathian heavy rock at its finest, lyrically deeply embedded in Victorian London lore, roaring Hammond organs and massive fuzz-drenched riffs.

@mastodonrocks – Marrow Deep
An emotional, crushing prog-metal powerhouse of an album – deeply personal, intense and packed with incredible guitar work and soaring choruses.

@polymoonband – Mariposa Magic!
A kaleidoscopic blast of cosmic psychedelic rock, bursting with colorful synths, explosive riffs and dreamlike atmospheres.

What an absurdly strong batch of releases! Which of these albums has been dominating your heavy rotation?

My favorite Albums of July 2026

July 2026 was an absolute monster of a month for new metal music considering the usual summer release slump. From crushing death metal and atmospheric black metal to dark goth rock waves, the releases in July delivered non-stop heat.

Here are my personal favorite records from July 2026 that have to be on your radar:

MY ALBUM OF THE MONTH:

@jehovahondeath – Lágrimas de Oro
This occult gothic rock album still has me addicted with multiple songs like Catherine Wheel, Suspiria or Blood Madonna being stuck in my head all the time. The sinister vibe combined with the outstanding performances and super catchy songs make me return to this one on a regular basis. It’s so fun!

STANDOUT HIGHLIGHTS:

@drywedding – The Back of Beyond
A creative and fairly unique genre mix of post-punk, gothic country and a bit of doom. The baritone vocals and imaginative lyrics make it an even more interesting listen.

@sallowmoth – Hydrophilous Brood
Wildly inventive, unpredictable death metal that pushes boundaries with dizzying riffing, sci-fi flair and relentless technical creativity.

@rezzzn – Cycles in the Infinite Dream
A heavy, hypnotic journey through psychedelic doom and sludge, wrapping crushing fuzz and lush sax passages into a cosmic soundscape.

@finsterforst_official – Still
This long-awaited return merges melancholic atmospheres with pulverizing riffage, haunting folk instrumentation and an unexpected NDW-inspired edge.

@cairiss_band – Wilderness
An emotional powerhouse of post-black metal and shoegaze, seamlessly balancing abrasive aggression with ethereal, cathartic melodies.

STRONGLY RECOMMENDED AS WELL:

Do not sleep on these very solid releases:

@infernoczbm – The Anthropic Sophisms

@movrir – Nous, Le Venin

@aenigmatum_pdx – Infinitude’s Passage

@psycroptic_official – The Pulse Of Annihilation

@intodarkness_official – Route to the Other Side

@ripper.chile – Towards Rebirth

@left_to_die_official – Initium Mortis

Torpor – Đungeon Đescent

@hoursofworship – Resignation

@protestthehero – Within

What were your absolute favorite highlights in July 2026?

Let “The Pall of a Past World” take you on an epic heavy metal journey!

Few bands in the German metal underground have as much cult devotion as LUNAR SHADOW – for good reason! Driven by the uncompromising artistic vision of founder and mastermind Max Birbaum, this project has consistently defied scene cliches, industry standards and social media algorithms. Whether rejecting mainstream streaming giants, avoiding any kind of trend or bravely reinventing their sound with pretty much every single release, Lunar Shadow is a rare kind of band that has always prioritised artistic freedom and integrity.

To fully appreciate this new album, “The Pall of a Past World,” you have to look at the band’s fascinating sonic evolution. They burst onto the scene with an outstanding epic metal debut “Far From Light” (2017), followed by the darker, sharper riff-fest “The Smokeless Fires” (2019). Then came “Wish To Leave” (2021) – a fairly controversial yet brilliant pivot into melancholic 80s post-punk and gothic rock that caught many fans off guard.

With “The Pall of a Past World” Birbaum brings everything full circle, delivering an adventurous and triumphant record that seamlessly blends their entire discography. This album marks a blistering return to their epic metal roots.The soaring, Iron Maiden-esque twin-guitar leads and high-octane heavy metal riffs are back in full force, fused with a far richer, atmospheric depth than ever before. Standout tracks like “The Cormorant” and “The Ventures of Tom Bombadil” fuse energetic heavy metal grit with Tolkien-inspired storytelling and melancholic vibes all throughout the record.

Taking total creative control, Birbaum recorded the entire music (besides drums) himself – including stepping up to lead vocals for the first time. The result is vulnerable, unpolished, and intensely genuine. Spinning this on vinyl and holding this gorgeous artwork in my hands is a powerful reminder of why physical sound carriers are essential. This isn't background music made for easy listening. It’s a deeply personal piece of heavy metal art made to last.

Certified metalbased classic №4: Dark Tranquillity – The Gallery

Hailing from Gothenburg, Sweden, Dark Tranquillity didn’t just participate in a movement – they played a huge part in creating an entire subgenre. Alongside At the Gates and In Flames, they formed the holy trinity of the Gothenburg Sound. While their 1993 debut “Skydancer” laid the raw foundation, it was their 1995 sophomore masterpiece, “The Gallery” that defined one of the absolute pinnacles of Melodic Death Metal.

What sets “The Gallery” apart from its peers of that era – like the thrash-driven intensity of “Slaughter of the Soul” or the folk-infused riffs of “The Jester Race” – is its sheer artistic elegance, progressive complexity, and poetic depth paired with the raw amounts of aggression that borders on black metal at times. This album also marked the legendary shift where Mikael Stanne stepped up to lead vocals, delivering one of the most iconic harsh vocal performances in extreme metal history.

The twin-guitar interplay between Niklas Sundin and Fredrik Johansson is a masterclass in neoclassical counterpoint and one of the outstanding qualities of the album. Tracks like the explosive opener “Punish My Heaven”, the emotionally crushing “Lethe”, and the breathtaking title track weave ferocious speed with intricate, twin-guitar harmonies, acoustic interludes, and subtle clean vocal contrasts. It proved that death metal could be deeply poetic, highly technical, and melancholic without sacrificing a single drop of extreme aggression at a time where the combination of these qualities was still fairly innovative. “Gothenburg death metal” was essential to my journey as a metalhead, and “The Gallery” is one of my absolute favorite albums to come out of that scene.

Spinning this album on vinyl while admiring Kristian “Necrolord” Wåhlin’s legendary, painterly artwork is pure physical media magic. “The Gallery” isn't just a Gothenburg milestone – it is a timeless work of art that laid one of the ultimate blueprints for modern melodeath.

Where does "The Gallery" rank in your all-time Gothenburg list?

Imperial Triumphant have finally clicked with me!

Few bands in modern extreme music push the boundaries of artistic identity quite like Imperial Triumphant. Since their inception in New York City, this masked trio has crafted a completely singular sound: a staggering blend of dissonant avant-garde death/black metal, free-jazz spontaneity, and neoclassicism. Decked out in gold masks and suit jacket grandeur, they don’t just play music – they dissect the rotting, glamorous underbelly of metropolis culture and serve it as art. They do so with incredibly smart and hard-hitting lyrics that work perfectly with their music.

With their latest opus entitled Goldstar the band delivers what feels like the most vital, calculated chapter of their discography to date. Goldstar is the undeniable next step for the group and a very natural evolution of the band’s signature musical style. Rather than retreating into incomprehensible chaos, they’ve refined their madness into sharper, more deliberate architectural shapes making this the very first record of this band that genuinely clicked with me. While I was fascinated by their previous output, I never really enjoyed listening to it, because it was just too disorientating and confusing to me.
But make no mistake and think that Goldstar offers accessible and easy listening music – their trademark technicality and suffocating jazz-metal arrangements are completely intact. However, Goldstar opens the door to a wider audience just a fraction wider. The grooves flow easier, the song structures are a bit more comprehensible and the hooks bite deeper without diluting an ounce of their avant-garde DNA. Lyrically and visually, the album still descends into a suffocating, dystopian darkness. It paints a bleak, atmospheric picture of urban ruin, excess, greed, and moral decay hidden beneath a sparkling, gilded facade.

It’s terrifying, exhilarating, and effortlessly sophisticated. Imperial Triumphant have taken the chaotic energy of NYC and refined it into pure, golden sonic terror that finally connects to me personally.
