"Voices in the Vessel" offers a decolonial reexamination of ceramics as an aesthetic and functional practice that preserves Indigenous epistemologies, material traditions, and intergenerational knowledge. Centuries before Western colonial contact, the Indigenous nations of the Americas cultivated intricate political, social, and artistic systems in which ceramicists were not just artisans, but spiritual storytellers. This book takes the reader on a journey through the precolonial Americas, beginning in the North with the Navajo/Diné, Zuni Pueblo, and Mexica/Nahua; moving South through the sophisticated painting techniques of the Maya; and concluding with the innovative forms of the Moche/Mochica and Inka/Tawantinsuyu civilizations. The recontextualization of these Indigenous nations removes notions of mythical and ancient rhetoric, instead reframing these communities as current and thriving.

Exploring both the historical and contemporary, this book reframes ceramic-making as a living testament to resilience, innovation, and Indigenous sovereignty.
