A follow up to my previous post about density, style, and ethos:
Shortly after I posted I was spammed with quite a few messages. Some were simply to show support, show intrigue, express interest, and general positive support. Many were criticisms. “Set more pockets” “set less jumps” “set more coordo” “the comp stuff is too easy” “the comp stuff is inaccessible” “nobody even climbs on this wall, change it” “this is my favorite wall” “when I go to other gyms only the rock climb styles walls get traffic”
…
It was interesting to see just how many people completely missed the point. My post alone could have been a decent study on bias, and how it can add a license to what we perceive.
In a gym, or a chain of gyms, we owe it to our members to provide them with high quality climbs. Each year,more and more movement is presented, tried, and learned it becomes harder and harder to provide a product for everyone unless you can diversify your space and assign it meaning. Not everything in a gym can be for any one person, but any one person can try everything in a gym.
