Seeing students experience the beauty of the opera house certainly never gets old! In 1937, the Guild presented its first student matinee at the Met, Verdi's Aida. Since then, the Guild has brought hundreds of thousands of students to experience live opera at the Met. #TBT by @metoperaguild

Guild Teaching Artist, Sophia Formella, shares how her experience learning and debuting a new operatic role informs her teaching practice:

This summer, I participated in Red River Lyric Opera’s Summer Festival. I played the role of Alice in the world premiere of Alice: An Operatic Wonderland by Amy Scurria. This opera is a re-imagination of Lewis Carroll’s “Adventures in Wonderland” filled with enchanting music. When preparing a new opera role, learning the music can be very challenging, as there are no recordings or prior performances to learn from. At the same time, getting to work with the composer and bring her vision to fruition has been very special. Being placed back in the “student” role taught me so much about how I learn. I found myself frequently asking in rehearsals “How would I teach this to a student?” “What method would I use to implement this technique to my students?” I believe this experience will positively impact my teaching practices in that I will be able to empathize with the students’ experiences. This experience will allow me to differentiate my teaching, scaffold when learning new music, and always keep learning new music fun! by @metoperaguild

This month, we’re taking some time to look back and reflect on our programming: how it has served students in the past, how we have continued and expanded our work, and of course, how we can continue to grow and look toward an even brighter future.

Follow along this month as we share a weekly #TBT and who knows, you might even recognize some of our students from past and present years! by @metoperaguild

This month, we hear from members of our Met Opera Guild community about ways they have expanded their operatic knowledge and learning this summer and how it connects back to their time spent with the Guild.

Margaret Laurens, a member of our Community Voices Choir, shares how her experience with the choir inspired her to explore her love of singing further:

"Somehow, opera was always on my mind. I’d heard Dame Kiri Te Kanawa sing unforgettable arias in A Room With A View, “Let the Bright Seraphim” at Prince Charles’ and Lady Diana’s wedding, and “The Heart is Slow to Learn”, at Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber’s 50th birthday bash. Finally, in 2022, I saw my first operas at the Met and joined the Metropolitan Opera Guild’s Community Voices Choir; we performed (arias!) in a culminating event at the Stanley H. Kaplan Penthouse. This newly discovered passion inspired me to attend the 10-day BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Competition in Wales in June 2023, where I met the Dame herself, Kiri Te Kanawa! Life does indeed Circle Round…!"
