The trial of the raging sea was a setup for the glory of God to be revealed and the works of God to be displayed (cf. John 9:1-3). He was passing by His fearful and faithless disciples, but they did not recognize Him. Their ignorance and unbelief showed in that, instead of assuming that their gracious Master, the One who multiplied the loaves, was coming to their aid, they were inclined to believe He was a specter of doom.

Jesus overcome their hardness of heart, instilling calm and courage, by revealing Himself. “It is I,” (literally “I am” [v. 50]). His glory passed by them on the waters, much like it passed before Moses while he was hidden in the cleft of the rock (Exodus 33:22; 34:6). Make no mistake that the Gospel writer is identifying Jesus as Yahweh, the God who treads upon and tames the treacherous seas.

The trial was intended for the disciples to know Jesus as the God of Glory that they may trust Him though every hardship they’d ever face.

Psalm 77:9-10
19 Your path led through the sea,
your way through the mighty waters,
though your footprints were not seen.
20 You led your people like a flock
by the hand of Moses and Aaron. taken in Metro Praise International Church - DFW by @metropraisedfw

Remembering those we lost as well as the faith, courage and sacrificial love exhibited by many good Americans on September 11, 2001.

Remembering today, as it was twenty three years ago, that our hope is in Almighty God alone.

“Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; he lifts his voice, the earth melts. Come and see what the Lord has done, the desolations he has brought on the earth. He makes wars cease to the ends of the earth. He breaks the bow and shatters the spear; he burns the shields with fire. He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.””

The intertwined stories of Jesus raising Jairus’ daughter and Him healing the woman with chronic bleeding assures us of this:

He’s not too busy.
You’re not forgotten.
It’s not too late.
