“Thomas Jefferson Byrd, was an actor in the unofficial repertory company of Spike Lee movies. What Joseph Cotton was to Orson Welles, Byrd was for Spike. The “everyman” character actor. He was a part of the Black Arts Renaissance of Fort Greene in the 80s... Byrd was brave, funny, creative, country, smooth, expressive, and a joy to be around. He will be remembered for those iconic moments in films that make up a unique canon in American cinema. Another soulful brother gone.” Word’s from friend Wendell Pierce. Hopefully answers to his death will come soon. by @mettleandpluck

A FEW WORDS AND NO SPOILERS 1: The latest episode of LOVECRAFT COUNTRY: “A Strange Case”

*******************
...the ideas and stories Lovecraft Country is giving! This is what happens when you allow the intersections and the under represented to control/ be at the forefront of the narrative. When a person of color, a woman of color, a queer person, a trans person is able to direct and adapt their stories through a medium that has been obstructed by constant gate keeping we reach new heights and deeper understanding of our own selves.
*
What Misha Green has done as showrunner so far, and creator of this series, (she also co-wrote many of the episodes, including this episode along with Jonathan I. Kidd and Sonya Winton) is amazing. What Cheryl Dunye has done with the latest episode is…::chefs kiss::. The body horror elements, the BALL, this idea of metamorphosis. The queerness poureth over. The inherent queerness in the body horror genre- the dysmorphia of not recognizing the body you are in, the pain that comes with physical transformation-allegories abound; the dichotomy of pain/pleasure involved in queer love making; the freedom that disco and music has and continues to bring to queer black folx across the world as a form of freedom and a safe space from the literal horrors of the world in “Lovecraft Country”.
*
—And you haven’t seen “The Watermelon Woman” you have a GIANT blind spot in your Independent American Cinema: period; not just black cinema, not just queer cinema. Cheryl Dunye has recently also directed amazing episodes of Queen Sugar, Dear White People, Claws and David Makes Man—
*
The supernatural/fantasy elements are quite extreme so if that isn’t your wheelhouse, give it a test run because the layers the writers and directors are providing is extraordinary. Also, seeing queer black and trans folks being at the center of this supernatural story WITH A BUDGET is something blerds have dreamed about for years. Yes, this show is for everyone, but, this is for us. I have not read the book and hearing that its written more as an anthology, I can’t wait to see how far it goes and how they continue to translate Matt Ruff’s origin by @mettleandpluck

Still processing. Still dealing with the crazy year. But I know she is resting well and in no more pain. She held through and fought hard and did her duty. I hope we come out and vote those hypocrites out of office in her honor. Carry on. Be strong. #restinpower. by @mettleandpluck

It is with immeasurable grief that we confirm the passing of Chadwick Boseman.⁣
⁣
Chadwick was diagnosed with stage III colon cancer in 2016, and battled with it these last 4 years as it progressed to stage IV. ⁣
⁣
A true fighter, Chadwick persevered through it all, and brought you many of the films you have come to love so much. From Marshall to Da 5 Bloods, August Wilson’s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and several more, all were filmed during and between countless surgeries and chemotherapy. ⁣
⁣
It was the honor of his career to bring King T’Challa to life in Black Panther. ⁣
⁣
He died in his home, with his wife and family by his side. ⁣
⁣
The family thanks you for your love and prayers, and asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time. ⁣

If you know, you know. If you don’t know- you need to be tuning in to Misha Green’s “Lovecraft Country” on HBO.

The first episode is so good, and filled with so many question: it’s gorgeous, beautiful, it pissed me off, it made me squeal. The world Misha Green creates and is about to open up is so intriguing. We love a story with amazing world building and the previews of what’s to come?! Amazing. I love that we are normalizing black and brown people in sci fi & fantasy. #moreplease

So that viral trailer of Fresh Prince is in development as a series? Awesome. Would love to see them really tackle the idea of respectability politics in this version as well. The idea is ripe for examination. Can’t wait to see the result. #Repost @shadow_act

Black creatives go and get it! 🙌🏾 Remember the viral 'Bel-Air' trailer by filmmaker @cooperfilms that took the internet by storm? 👀

Over a year later, the trailer (which caught @willsmith's attention) is now in development as a drama series from Smith and its director, Morgan Cooper, and we love to see it! The reboot is Westbrook Studios and Universal TV production. 📺 Click the 🔗 in our bio to find out more! by @mettleandpluck

Directed by Shaka King, hoping theaters will re-open in 2021 for us to enjoy this on the BIG screen, “Only In Theaters” “The story of Fred Hampton, Chairman of the Illinois Black Panther Party, and his fateful betrayal by FBI informant William O'Neal.” Wit by @mettleandpluck
