You have your own business, you help take care of your mom and family, and you’re a role model for your church friends and community. Happy 70th Birthday to my beautiful Mommie, Katy Mariyama Gerard-Yhap ❤️✨

The older I get, the more in awe of you I become.

As a child, I loved you because you were my mother. But as an adult, I now understand the depth of your strength, resilience, grace, and sacrifice in a completely different way. You raised my sister and me in a foreign country while war was tearing apart home back in Liberia… and somehow, you still made our childhood feel magical and full of love.

And through all of that, you still reinvented yourself multiple times, learned entirely new careers, and built your own business with your own hands — keeping it thriving for 20 years through pure hard work, loyalty, warmth, and character. I still remember painting your first spa ❤️

You created so many of the little traditions that became the heartbeat of my childhood — singing Happy Birthday at midnight, opening one Christmas gift on Christmas Eve, always making our home feel full of food, laughter, comfort, and love. Even now, my friends still talk about how welcomed and cared for they felt around you.

And honestly… at least once a week I realize: omg, I AM YOU 😂 In my habits, my strength, my spirit — pieces of you live so deeply inside of me.

It feels strange to say “I’m proud,” but I am SO proud that my mom is my mom ❤️

To everyone who knows and loves my Mommie, please share a memory or story about a time she touched your life. Let’s give people their flowers while they are here to receive them 🌹

Granddaddy. James Ovid Shugars-Yhap, Sr. was born on October 3, 1931 in Guyana. 🇬🇾 He taught me how to use chop sticks, loved grape soda, and played tennis for fun. He was deeply in love with my grandmother, Genevieve Celestine McClain, and followed her to Liberia to begin their lives together. Their story is beautiful, and my father wrote about it, if you’re interested check out his blog. https://liberianteacher.wordpress.com - he has a lot of stories about Liberia but of course, this one is my favorite. It’s crazy to think this is my last year of my 30’s! Life is amazing and I thank God that I’m here, I’m happy, and I’m blessed beyond measure. THANK YOU FOR ALL THE BIRTHDAY LOVE - Leo season can now come to an end.

Thanks to my sister @libgoldie, my cousin @ceramicpineapple and my girlfriends for throwing me “a few of my favorite things” tea party and shout out to @shopbombchel for this super cute tie-dye wrap dress - I felt very #demure very #cutesy. A few years ago I curated the SHABU@90 exhibition here in Monrovia, Liberia. A young lady, @_brittanyadeline happened to be in Liberia visiting family and was interested in seeing the show, but unfortunately it was too late - the exhibit was closed. She was the cousin of a good friend; vibrant, curious and enthusiastic about art. I could tell she would enjoy the Baba Shabu’s work so I hosted an intimate exhibition of pieces for her, her mother and her sister.

Over the past two years she and I have kept in touch. We even happened to be in LA at the same time so we connected and went to the Getty Museum together. She is a champion for art and I love that she kept me in mind to curate the seventeenth online exhibition @white_columns. Thank you again Brittany and the White Columns team @erin__somerville and @matthewhiggs2015 for this opportunity. It was truly and honor and a privilege to put together this online show.

Honestly y’all this was an amazing experience. I look forward to continuing to share my love for art and maybe even my own work someday.
