Mark from Under the Radar here. When I first discovered Danish band Mew online in 2003, they didn’t seem to have an American label or publicist. I tracked down a UK contact, and we arranged a feature on their album “Frengers” for Issue 6. During a holiday trip to London to visit my British family, Wendy photographed the band atop a chilly Primrose Hill and I interviewed them in a much warmer café.

A year or so later, Mew came through Los Angeles, where we were based at the time, and appeared on our radio show, which broadcast via an early internet station (and a pirate radio signal across L.A.). Anton Newcombe of The Brian Jonestown Massacre hosted the show after ours.

Mew later performed at two of our SXSW events, headlining one. Wendy shot official publicity photos of them during one of those trips at The Texas Federation of Women’s Clubs Headquarters, a historic 1931 building. We’ve covered every Mew album since “Frengers,” which we named one of the best albums of the 2000s.

Since forming in 1995, Mew’s core has been Jonas Bjerre (vocals/guitar/keyboards) and Silas Utke Graae Jørgensen (drums), with founding bassist Johan Wohlert returning in 2013 after a seven-year break, and founding guitarist Bo Madsen departing in 2015. Now, after 30 years, Mew are in the midst of a farewell tour, with Bjerre moving on to other creative projects.

Twenty-four years in, we’re still not ready to say farewell to Under the Radar’s print magazine. Issue 75 is nearly ready to go, but after our longtime printer was bought by a new company that raised their rates, we’re facing a $7,000 funding gap. To reference the title of Mew’s fifth album, we don’t want there to be “no more stories” on our favorite indie rock artists in Under the Radar.

Subscriptions are 25% off, back issues are 50% off, and you can also support us via advertising or Patreon.

Each issue includes about 20 interviews, 30–40 album reviews, and a downloadable MP3 sampler with up to 40 tracks.
