Sunset at “Les Tres Xemeneies” from a recent trip to Barcelona.
I found navigating public transport in Barcelona a bit confusing and one evening when I was supposed to meet friends at a party on the outskirts of the city I took the wrong line of “R” train and ended up in Sant Adrià de Besòs. When I looked out the window of the train I saw the towering shadow of Les Tres Xemeneies/The Three Chimneys and knew this wasn’t where I should be. But took the opportunity to get some photos of the iconic brutalist style building.
The 200 meter structure is a former thermal power station, built in the 1970s by a Spanish textile manufacturing and defense company, Fábrica Española de Confecciones, S.A. (FECSA).
During construction, locals protested due to environmental concerns and disapproval of the appearance they believed to be distasteful. In 1973, the build faced further controversy when working conditions led to labour workers striking. The severe response from police force led to the despicable death of one worker.
In the 2000s, the locals initial concerns proved correct when the managing company became involved in a court case regarding claims of black rain and pollution caused by the plant and it was permanently closed in 2011.
While the company planned for the destruction of the structure, many locals disputed this, joining forces to save the building they had grown to love. In 2015 local government took control of the site.
