🧡 THE REASON | Meet Alan Keeper

Behind the work we do at MFNERC are people who bring their knowledge, experience, culture, and passion to First Nations education every day.

In this video, meet Alan Keeper, Cultural Facilitator with the Manitoba First Nations Education Resource Centre.

Through his work, Alan shares cultural knowledge and brings astronomy to life through planetarium presentations in First Nations communities. Drawing on his experience as an educator, he values the opportunity to use his skills while sharing traditional knowledge with communities and, most importantly, with young people. 🌌✨

For Alan, education is not only about what you learn—it’s also about what you can carry forward and share with the next generation.

🎥 Hear from Alan about his reason for being part of MFNERC and the work that continues to inspire him.

🧡 Every Child Matters

Today, on Orange Shirt Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we hon-our residential school Survivors, their families and communities, and remember the chil-dren who never made it home.

At MFNERC, we remain committed to supporting First Nations education grounded in language, culture, truth, healing, and the strength of First Nations communities.

The orange shirt is more than a symbol, it is a reminder of the experiences of genera-tions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis children and the lasting impacts of the residential school system.

Today and every day, we encourage everyone to listen, learn, reflect, and continue the work of reconciliation. 🧡

🍂🌿 Connecting Through Culture, Wellness & Community

Before the start of a new school year, the MFNERC Languages and Cultures Department came together for its annual Fall Institute at Camp Manitou, a time to reconnect, recharge, learn, and prepare for the year ahead.

The Fall Institute serves as an important reminder of the Resource Centre’s mandate to support the revitalization of First Nations languages, cultures, and traditional skills while also creating space for staff wellness and connection. 🧡

Throughout the gathering, staff participated in activities that brought learning, culture, and fun together, from learning about traditional medicines with Shirley Ewanchuk and preparing a fish fry and bannock to sewing, creating, team-building activities, and spending meaningful time with colleagues.

The Institute also emphasized an important message: taking care of ourselves helps us continue showing up for the First Nations schools and communities we serve.
As we begin another school year, staff return refreshed, connected, and ready to continue supporting language, culture, traditional knowledge, and learning across our communities. 🌿✨
