The @humediaarts MFA Media Theory class took a semester of reading/discussing/responding to contemporary media topics and turned it into Capsule, a gorgeous magazine filled with art, writing, and inspiration for going forward from here. Thanks to everyone who helped! And to those many writers & thinkers who gave us so much to read/think about over 15 weeks.

NY CITY OF KINGS — A History of New York City Graffiti (2023)

Signed by Al Díaz with additional inscription: “SAMO©...4-U...” and “BOMB ONE,” tag plus 2 stickers and Howl! Happening show program included.

Compiled by Al Díaz (@albert_diaz1) Eric Felisbret and Mariah Fox (@mfoxfoto).

Created for the Howl! Happening exhibition in NYC (Nov 19, 2022 – Jan 15, 2023), this Phase 2 Tribute Edition chronicles the rise of New York City graffiti from its late 1960s origins to today.

Told from the perspective of the writers who started it all - like Al - this narrative offers a rare and authentic insider’s look at how NYC graffiti culture spread globally and became a lasting force in popular culture.

The exhibition featured a monumental walk-through timeline showcasing hundreds of iconic and obscure images, stories, and lore spanning over five decades.

“What makes this exhibit different is that the narrative is told through the lens, and voice of the actual players who created graffiti, not observers, gallerists, art historians, collectors or academics. New York City graffiti artists have historically been underrepresented and our narrative has been misinterpreted or skewed. An accessible, concise account for the general public has been overdue. As a lifelong, committed member of the graffiti and art communities, I feel compelled to share this story, and I am proud to have an opportunity to tell it.”

- Al Díaz, NYC (August 2022)

Part 1. Short version (see FB for long version)
After earning my first research sabbatical for the next school year, I decided to retreat off the grid. I gathered up my twins, pooch and filled the car with everything important it could hold. We drove 2,100 miles from New Mexico, to the cool, wet Shangri-la of Lake Buel, in the Massachusetts Berkshires. The kids, Juno, Al and I spent the last month off and on purging, cleaning, renovating our family cabin in the forest. We hit 11 states including Niagara Falls, The Saint Louis Gateway Arch, Central Park, Chinatown, Museums, a Basquiat exhibit, the Brooklyn Bridge, The Berkshires, and much more… Now settled, alone with Juno in this ancestral cabin, I am content working on Basquiat research and writing…
