Will you believe me if I told you that Fruits and Veggies That Help Your Projections is finally online!! It’s been three years since wrapping production and one year since we finished its (and my first) film festival run, omg! I know it’s been a while but, as many of you know, I struggle with sharing my work online. Regardless of how long it’s been since production and how my work has evolved/changed, I’m super proud of the film, the team that made it happen, and myself 💌 I never thought I would go to film school, let alone complete a short and travel around showing it to different audiences?! Aaah! Many many words and thank yous as I’ve expressed over these last few years. This short and story mean a LOT to me. Definitely overdue, but it’s all yours now! who do i name in my memories and how will i make them live on? .a small zine that was born out of walking around the Met, specifically when i visited a platica and workshop for the Casa Susana exhibit. an exhibit of more than 160 photographs and publications created by and for a community of cross-dressers (self-identified) who met regularly in New York City and the Catskills Mountains throughout the 1960s. photographs told a clear story of a queer safe haven, community, and history. works were titled with people’s names: Susanas, Lorettas, Lilis, Unidentified. while the exhibition marked the importance of affirming community and identity, it failed to recognize those Unidentified. i walked around the museum for hours, of course Casa Susana is not the only exhibition guilty of this. wether it’s for protection or indifference, where do the experiences left Unidentified go? do they freeze when they’re framed for others to decipher? are they weaved into other stories? or do they live as memory maps in unaware successors? may the Unidentified live beyond the gaze of museum goers.special shout out for those in the platica working hard to preserve & memorialize those unidentified and beyond <3 Zakiya Collier @zzcollier with Black Memory Workers @blackmemoryworkers , Librada González Fernández @lalibrada with CubaneCuir @cubanecuir , Luis Juárez @luis_jua with Balam @revistabalam , and Sky Syzygy @sky.syzygy with gender.network + thank u to Devin Osorio @devinosorio for leading the art practice of this day!.all words used in zine from published essays in Transvestia (1960-86). by @mfragosob
