It’s the day after Trans Day of Visibility and guess what…? We’re still here! 🤗🏳️‍⚧️To my trans, intersex, non-binary, gender-non-conforming siblings and anyone else who has ever questioned if they are “Kenough”… I want you to know that I see you. I champion you. I am so unbelievably proud of you ☺️ The world is loud, but I promise you are not alone 💚Gender journeys are messy, nuanced, unique, and so so beautiful. I wish everyone could experience the life-affirming bliss of trans joy and gender euphoria 🙌To the cis people reading this post - your allyship and advocacy is more crucial than ever. Today and every day do what you can to make the trans people in your life feel safe ❤️‍🩹🏳️‍⚧️Step outside your bubble and seek out trans media. Seek out trans storytellers and artists 🎥🎶📚Take the time to educate yourself and allow your worldview to expand as you learn more about others’ lived experiences. Lean into curiosity when you don’t understand something, rather than fear. The first time I watched “Enola Holmes,” I was taken aback by this exchange. Not only is it satisfying to see the smugly erudite Sherlock checked on his privilege, but the way Edith does it is succinct and firm. She’s stating a fact, not making a case, and there was something quiet and powerful about that.I love when social commentary finds its way into media, especially in pieces where I didn’t anticipate finding it.I wanted to share this clip because it encapsulates a lot of the discourse I’m seeing online these days. Our country is at a critical inflection point, as many white people are waking up to a reality Black folks have warned us about for decades, centuries.And to be at this inflection point during a month when Black artists and activists are being celebrated - when their words, their stories, and their sacrifices are all over our feeds - there could not be a better time for an education.The truth is, we don’t know what we don’t know. Blindspots and biases are inevitable and it’s okay to have grace for your journey. It’s a marathon, not a sprint, and I know there are peaks and valleys I have not yet discovered in my own.What’s important is that you are willing to go on the journey. To interrogate any biases you uncover and educate yourself. To do the work.Exhibit A: If you saw that screenshot of Barack and Michelle Obama as apes - which was posted by our sitting president - and your blood wasn’t boiling, it’s time to check your privilege.So many people don’t understand the racist origins of such an image, due to a general lack of media literacy, as well as an education tailored to gloss over or ignore the parts of history that make us (white people, in particular) uncomfortable.Please take the time to listen and learn. It’s been over a week since the @strangerthingstv finale dropped, so I wanted to share some of my favorite posts I’ve seen about the show ☺️ I’ve tagged the content creators who made them, so please engage with the original work on their pages if any of these resonated with you as well 🤗There’s a good mix of funny, insightful, and downright heart wrenching in this little carousel. Enjoy 😅(🚨Spoiler Alert is in effect, so don’t swipe through until you’ve seen the final episode)I love when media creates conversation, and seeing the memes, reels, posts, and fan theories that have been shared over the past couple months has been a wonderful reminder of the power a good story has to bring us together.Watching the internet collectively mourn the final chapter of “Stranger Things” has made it a whole lot easier to say goodbye to this show and these characters whose lives I’ve been following for nearly a decade.It’s the end of an era, but I hope we can take the lessons learned into our own lives. That’s the beauty of storytelling - you get to watch fictional characters fight monsters, and at the end of the battle, you find yourself empowered and inspired.The Duffer Brothers perfectly captured the innocence and joy of youth, the terror and excitement of growing up, and the quiet sadness of leaving childhood behind. “The Party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.”- George Orwell, “1984”I’ve been thinking a lot about media literacy over the past few years. How stories can be such a powerful mirror on society and provide a way to make complex problems more digestible.And seeing this quote from “1984” go viral as the administration tries to spread misinformation about Renee Nicole Good’s murder is an encouraging reminder that the stories we consume have the ability to inspire and embolden us to stand against oppression.To help propel this notion further, I wanted to share this screencap, along with a brief film analysis. Because having “Wicked” release at a time when its themes and topics are so relevant has given us a form of escapism that also allows us to see reflections of our own world in its fictional one. If we are willing to make those connections.The parallels between the current administration and the Wizard/Madam Morrible are almost too on the nose, but perhaps more important is the role the side characters play in the narrative.Because we are the Ozians in this scenario. We are the ones being fed the misinformation about who is truly “Wicked,” and it is up to us to hold the real villains accountable.There is a deeper conversation here about Glinda and Elphaba, one which I’m seeing play out in the commentary that admonishes people for finally getting fed up now that the violence is directed towards a white person.“Wicked” beautifully and heartbreakingly explores the separate journeys that exist for someone born into privilege, who has agency in their choice to take a stand, and someone who grew up outside the bubble, who has long been fighting for their own survival and that of others.For some, the bubble has just burst, and their shock and grief are very real.Others are not shocked. They’re furious. Voices hoarse from cries for justice that have gone unheard for decades.Whichever part of the journey you are on, one thing remains true:This shouldn’t be normal. Last Monday I got to attend a writers panel at Grub Street, and it was one of the most affirming evenings I’ve had in a while ☺️I had intended to maybe take pictures for the ‘gram, but instead came home with notebook pages full of wisdom. In honor of the official release of “Changing” yesterday, I’m bringing it back to the first time @kevinjonas performed this song at @fenwaypark this past August during the Jonas Brothers’ Greetings From Your Hometown Tour.The energy in that stadium was electric.
